tarry Hassell home at Reklaw featured in tour
From the spiral staircase to the
gingerbread trim aro nd the porch,
the Reklaw home Larry and
Andra Hassell is filled with cre-
ative touches that ec 10 times long
past.
The home is one of four resi-
dences featured thi year on the
Christmas Tour of Homes. The
annual event is conducted by the
Omicron Gamma Chapter of Beta
Sigma Phi.
Built in 1904 in Jacksonville by
the Haws family, the Hassell home
began as a one-story structure. In
1982, the home was purchased by
the couple and moved to Reklaw,
where extensive modifications and
renovations began with the help of
Mrs. Hassell's father, James
Crawford.
Three generations of the family
contributed to the transformation,
which took two years to complete.
"There are many, many memo-
ries in this house," said owner
Andra Hassell. "I just hope people
enjoy it a fraction as much as we've
enjoyed working on it."
The family added a spiral stair-
case and converted the attic into
two bedrooms with separate bath-
rooms for their two children. The
oldest, Les, and his wife, Beth, are
returning to East Texas from
Pensacola, Fla. The
youngest, Lana, re-
sides in Rusk with
husband, Gary
Starkey, and the
couple's two chil-
dren, Dylan and
Delaney.
Family photos of
all are prominent
throughout the
home.
Described by the
owners as a Victo-
rian-style home
with country
touches, the Hassell
residence features
12-foot-tall ceilings
downstairs. More
than 200 rolls of
wallpaper were
used to create lush
floral patterns in
most rooms. High
rafters and numer-
ous nooks and cran-
nies hold an impres-
sive selection of vin-
tage tools, signs,
glassware and col-
lectibles.
The home has three fireplaces,
including an ornate wood burning
fireplace in the study with intri-
cate, hand carved detail. All the

Upstairs, the childrens' bed-
rooms feature displays of Rusk
High School cheerleading uniforms
and football jerseys, artwork and
doors covered with signatures and
messages dating to 198(5 that were
added by Les and Lana s high
school friends.
The Hassell home is at 135
Lamar Street, northwest of the
intersection of U.S. (M and High-
way 204 in Reklaw. It was previ-
ously featured on the 1984 Christ-
mas Tour of Homes.
This year's tour will he held from
2-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3. Along
with the Hassell house, the tour
includes the homes of David and
