William Eckel of Rusk was
among the 27 Pearl Harbor survi-
vors who attended activities
aboard the USS Pearl Harbor this
summer. He was the only Texan
in the crew.
Of the 163 Pearl Harbor survi-
vors 30 were invited by the mili-
tary to attend the event. Only 27,
including Mr. Eckel, accepted the
invitation.
Mr. Eckel went aboard the ship
on July 15 and they pulled out to
sea on July 17, returning to San
Diego on July 24.
In addition to the Pearl Harbor
survivors, family members of the
crew were invited.
Also, Mr. Eckel related, that five
persons from the National Geo-
graphic Magazine and Program
were on board. A documentary is
being prepared by them on Pearl
Harbor, which will be shown some
time in May. Their production will
be presented in conjunction with
the Disney Pearl Harbor movie,
which is a fictitious movie about
Pearl Harbor.
Mr. Eckel served aboard the USS
New Orleans. The ship USS Pearl
Harbor is the realization of a
dream of survivors to have a ship
named about the bombing that
brought the United States into
World War II. On Dec. 7, 1941,
Japan declared war on the United
States and bombed the American
ships and military base at Pearl
Harbor, Hawaii.
There was a crew on board to
operate the ship but the veterans
relieved their days on board a Navy
vessel. This endeavor adventure

Different from the World War II
days, they lived in air conditioned

"The only complaint that I have is
that they had rice twice a day
throughout the trip," Mr. Eckel
said.

"But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou
shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy
manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any
of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy
manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou."
