jyTARY fell back in her choir as
she realized the full import
of Dr. Lenox's strange offer. He
could not be serious. But he was.
His eyes, steady upon her, told
her his proposal, however strange,
was entirely sincere.
"Anna, I'm not expecting this
to be a marriage of love. I know
you're in love with someone else.
I can understand why you've not
gone to him only too well.
"What I am suggesting for us
is an arrangement of friendship
only. You arc alone, and I am
sure it you haven't found a job
by now, your money Is pretly low.
I feel personally responsible for
you because when you were so
close to denth I did what I could
to bring you through."
Mary's eyes flashed with some-
thing of her old spirit.
"You pity me," she accused.
He tilted her chin with his hand,
forcing her eyes to look into his.
"You must believe, at least, I
am sincere in wanting to help
you."
Mary's excitement lessened un-
der his calm.

Tongues ol orange ilamed from
the burning coal. A clock licked
ioftly. Except for these tiny
sounds, there was silence in the
room.
• « •
AT length Mary roused herself.
"What you sold is true. I
am desperate. I have no money.
While I'm disfigured like this, I
can't bear to face anyone who
knew me before . . ." Her voice
faltered and he did not expect her
to continue.
It was as If she was speaking
her thoughts aloud. "But that
doesn't mean I haven't any pride,"
ihe went on after a pause. "And
that doesn't mean ray. dreamt «re

He knocked the ashes out of his
pipe and waited for her to con-
tinue.
"A chapel wedding, a bridal veil
and orange blossoms, organ music
and a honeymoon, these are all
part of what marriage has mennt
to me."
"I understand." He spoke quiet-
ly. "Naturally my strange offer of
marriage has given you a Jolt,
coming as it did out of a clear
sky."
"I appreciate your offer. I know
you only spoke to help, as a friend.
But you'll have to give me time
to think it over. When aro you
going to France?"
"I don't know. Any day, now."
Dr. Lenox stood up. He reucnea
for his coat. "Do think it over.
Consider it seriously. I don't want
you to do anything you might be
sorry for. But on the other hand,
if I do come back from the front,
I'll give you your freedom when-
ever you want it."
