the naming of his brother, Edward, as the Duke of Windsor.

title of prince, and the man who until yesterday was England’s
king, officially, will be known now as His Royal Highness, the

CAN King Edward VIII return to England or its dominions
U now that he has abdicated?
This is a question many readers have asked The Press
to answer.
The answer is he likely will not, although it is quite
within his legal rights to do so. The erstwhile monarch, now
Prince Edward, is a voluntary exile from the empire and it
is not mandatory that he continue to remain off Brit-
ish soil.
The issue is one of propriety. His appearance anywhere
in the empire might cause a demonstration favorable or
unfavorable—which in either case would prove embarrass-
ing to the reigning monarch, his brother.
Edward is in no way disgraced, as would be a compul-
sory exile. Of course, he might return by overwhelming
request of the people, but this is unlikely. First, the abdica-
tion being of his own choosing, he probably would turn, a
deaf ear to entreaties to undo his own act. Second, the queen
mother, Mary, has asked her subjects to be loyal to the new
king and they most likely will. . ’
4 In his farewell address yesterday, Edward said ...
PIt may be some time before I return to my native land . . .”
| This definitely indicates that he might go back whenever
he chose.
