TEXARKANA ARKANSAS WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 21 1900
STREET PAVING BIDS.
The Bids Range From $57463 to
$78974. It is Not Given Out
Who Gets the Contract.
The bids for paving the streets of
East Texarkana opened yester-
day afternoon in the private office
of John P. Kline. There were pres-
ent a half dozen contractors who
bad in bids and they showed by
their looks that they were on the
anxious bench and were awaiting
Ute reading of the bids with al) the
interest that they could command.
Kline read off the
bids they can be summed up as
follows? <■
Frank Whitley $57463; Talbot
Bros. $58520; Ward & Ockander
$60385; Heidlberg & Chatwin $65-
190; Brown A Dabner. $75865; B. C.
Storrie $78974. $21511 between
highest and lowest bids.
Os course these dbntrators had
selected the materia) they were to
use some brick of dinerent brands
and some had figured for stone
curbing while otherg.for brick. In
fact the bids in the way they have
been put in will require a lot of
going over and figuring to deter-
mine the best and lowest bid.
In regard to Mr. Whitlev’s bid
he had not complied with require-
ments of the letting of the bid as
he had not put up ’the check to
show that he was reddy to fulfill the
contract and when} his bid was
opened the committee decided not
to consider it and it! was pigeon-
holed for the time bqing though it
may be resurrected on his putting
up the check which jie says he can
do or at least make Jthe boud to do
the work. In saying that Mr.
Whitley’s bid may yet be consid-
ered we do not speak authoritively
for we have not talked to the mem-
bers of the commission as to the
subject.
Several of the bidders are yet
here awaiting developments while
others have pulled out.

WAR NEWS.

enso after but slight resistance and
Gen. Buller holds the line of the
Tugela on the south side from Co-
lenso to Eagle’s Nest.
Two British officers were killed
during the relief es Kimberly viz;:
Lieut. A. 13. Hesketh 16th Lanc-
ers; Lieut. —the Hon. W. McClin-
tock—Bunbury Second Dragoons.
The Queen has appealed to vet-
erans of other wars to form battal-
ions for home defense which she
will designated as the Royal Reserve
Battalion.
Gen Buller’s casualties from Feb.
15 to 18 were 14 killed and 160
wounded.
Gen. French’s losses in the relief
of Kimberly were seven killed and
35 wounded.
Bold Attempt at Robbery.
Between the hours of midnight
and 4 o’clock this morning a bold
attempt was made to enter Hie safi
in the saloon of Ben and Charley
corner of Broad and State streets
in the most business district of city.
The would-be safe tappers made
their entrance and exit through a
transom at the back part of the
saloon and used as instruments in
the perpetration of their work upon
the safe a hammer used by paper
hangers and a screw driver which
they took from one of the drawers
behind the bar.
The would-be crooksmen were
evidently hungry aa well as thirsty
forthey indulged in cheese beer and
other liquids to their heart's content
of which they left evidence behind
the job as performed on the safe
was a very buuglesome one and
went to prova that the performers
were novices in the business. While
getting all the stays out of the
hinges to the safe they did notsuc-
ceed In gaining entrance thereto
having evidently been frightened
away by approaching footsteps on
the outside and in their flight left
behind them articles that may lead
to their identification.

learned that Contractor G. J.
Elsllis had about completed work
upon the building. A little more
painting and washing of the outside
brick walls with acid will finish it up.
It is one of the finest edifices of the
kind in the state. I n the near future
