PRAGUE, Czechoslovakia,
March 11. (P)—Jan Masaryk will
be gives a state funeral Saturday
by Czechoslovakia "a Communist-
fintrolled government. He will be
laid to rest betide hit father,
founder and first president of the
republic.
The 61-year-old non-party for-
eign minister was found dead yes-
terday, two weeks after the new
cabinet came to power, in a stone
courtyard more than 50 feet below
his bathroom window at the for-
eign office The government said
set by radio broadcasts, with con-
tinuous reference to his death and
he jumped.
Funeral services will be held
we the pantheon of the Prague ed at his death by their sorrow-
museum in the capital’s Central Ing. The tone of melancholy was
Square. Communist Premier Kle-
ment Gottwald will apeak. Burial
will be in the family plot at Lany, with the somber melodies of Czech
beside the grave of Thomas G.
Masaryk, who was president from
1918 to 1935 and died in 1937.
Czechoslovakia mourned the
minister today in a shocked melan-
choly. Half-staffed tricolors and
black banners did not begin to tell
the story of the loss felt by the
nation's “little people.”
Czechoslovaks are a hard-head-
ed. soft-hearted people, unasham-
ed of sentimentality. The love
they lavished on their world-fam-
ous son in his lifetime was match-
funeral music. '
To thousands the loss was per-
sonal, because Masaryk numbered
his personal friends in the thou-
sands. And to millions the coun-
try’s loss was real, because they
shared with him the tradition of
the Masaryk family name and the
big part it played in the birth
and building of the republic of
the Czechs and Slovaks during and
after the first world war.
They knew the young Jan who
stood up in the councils of the
world and talked with the mighty.
And they knew he came back to
enjoy picnics in the country, to
A GOOD
QUESTION
WASHINGTON, March II.
(UP)—The similarity between
Undersecretary of State Ro-
bert A. Lovett and one of his
assistants hit so embarrassing
high the other day. Both men,
ere bald, and their voices
sound alike.
A third high-ranking State
Department official called Lov-
ett’s office on the telephone.
He thought the assistant an-
swered.
“You old bald-heeded so-and-
* so, what are you doing at the
Undersecretary’s desk?” the
caller asked.
“That is s very fair ques-
tion indeed, and one I frequent-
ly ask myself,” replied none
other than Lovett.

That was the last time western
correspondents saw him in any
number During and after the
political crisis that saw Czecho-
slovakia go under Communist con-
trol, he denied himself to western
newsmen.
What politics, what policies lay
behind his moves and his state-
ments while he remained a non-
party member of the Communist-
controlled government may never
be known.
What went on in his mind
through a sleepless night in his
apartment in the foreign minis-
try’s Czernin Palace was a com-
pelling mystery in the personal
life of Masaryk and the political
life of his country.
His government said officially
that he was ill, suffered from
insomnia, was overwrought from
reading reproachful messages
from friends in England and
America, and in a nervous crisis
ended his life.
No suicide note has been men-
tic ned. Masaryk was found hud
died on the stone flagged, his
head unhurt, his eyes closed, the
official version said. The cause
of death still was to be made
known by post-mortem examina-
tions.

Reaves, 62, who died Tuesday- af-
ternoon at her home at Lake

rie” had spent much time in re-
cent years at Colorado Springs,
Colo. She was a native of Brown
County She was, graduated from
Daniel Baker College and the Uni-
versity of Texas and held a mas-
ter's degree from the University
of Colorado.
For many years "Miss Carrie”
had been active in educational,
church, club and political circles.
Before the USO was set up, she
took the lead In providing off-duty
recreation for soldiers at Camp
Bowie, continuing the work
throughout the war. She was pres-
ident of the Sixth District of Fed-
erated Women’s Clubs. 1
Survivors are two sisters, Mrs
Ace Hickman of Baird and Mrs,

WASHINGTON, March 11. —
The feud over Loyalty Board re-
cords brought a new cross fire of
charges today involving Dr. Ed-
ward U. Condon.
Meanwhile the battle mounted
between the executive and legis-
lative branches of the government.
Demands that congressional com-
mittees be given access to the loy-
alty files led to a report that
President Truman may issue a
counter order to refuse such re-
quests, even when backed with a
subpoena.
The House Un-American Activ-
ities Subcommittee, which set off
the conflict, was itself accused of
un-American action by Secretary
of Commerce Harriman The cab-
inet officer issued a formal state-
ment last night attacking the
group’s investigation of Condon,
director of the Bureau of Stan-
dards.
“The subcommittee’s action is,
in my opinion, un-American," Har-
riman said:
“It summoned members of my
staff to secret sessions. It has pub-
lished its interpretation of their
testimony. The press and public
were excluded and could not form
an Independent opinion. From my
knowledge of the situation, I can
say that the subcommittee’s act-
ion is misleading."
A few' hours earlier Chairman
Nixon (R-Calif) of the subcommit-
tee charged that the Commerce
summarizing two days of secret
questioning of seven department
witnesses, Nixon said the Com-
Commerce Department’s Loy
alty Board studied the case for
ten months but heard only one
witness—Condon himself
The showdown over Loyal-
ty Board records appeared to rest
with Attorney General Torn Clark.
A government official reported pri-
vately that Clark may be asked
to rule on a general directive to
all executive departments order-
ing them to refuse the confidential
data to Congress.
