OPORTS writing is a thankless
D task.
Some scriveners have toiled con-
sciehtiously for a life-time without
an expression of gratitude. They’ve
been called burns, morons, nitwits
and at times referred to in un-
printable language.
So it's real news when a sports
figure makes a favorable comment,
even when members of the Fours
Estate have boomed him to high
heaven. .
Fort Worth scribes this week
were practically felled to a nine-
count upon receiving the following
note:
"We want to take this opportun

the fine publicity given us during
the playoff series. We think ft
was magnificent."

lous stage.
Dr. Smith, who. incidentally, is a
former president of McMurry col-
lege. did not name the schools in-
terested in the new conference. It
was learned they are located in big
cities and are starting football for
the first time or intend to resume
sports after a wartime layoff.
Mentioned as possible members
have been University of Houston.
Trinity university of San Antonio.
Centenary college of Shreveport, a
pre-war football powerhouse, the
University of Kansas City, the Uni-
versity of Denver and Regis col-
lege, and Southwestern university
of Georgetown.
Dr. Smith has said he favors
football at Oklahoma City only on
a big-time scale, and plans to put
the Goldbugs on the map, if inter-
collegiate sports are resumed.
The Oklahoma City educator was
vice-president of SMU during the
Mustangs most successful football
days.
Oklahoma City will go after a

BROOKLYN. Jan. 15.--
Take 75 pitchers, 15 catchers and
80 assorted infielders and outfield-
ers, add 30 managers, coaches and
scouts and a slightly used black
board manned by Professor Branch
Rickey and you get a rough idea
of the Brooklyn Dodgers' spring
training plans.
Returning to his Flatbush desk
after a siege of illness, Rickey has
outlined plans for a 150-man camp
at Sanford, Florida, opening Feb.

men considered successful in a par-

El Brancho has invited all the
“more likely players” from the
national defense lists of his lead-
ing farm clubs and the Brooks in
addition to a selected few hold-
overs to compete for jobs in a 150-
man scramble preceding the for-
mal drills.
Manager Leo Durocher will have
charge of a squad of master minds
running from Coaches Chuck Dres-
sen and John Corriden to Pitcher
Curt Davis and Second Baseman
Ed Stanky whom Rickey thinks is
"managerial timber."
■ Two ball games a day will keep
the huge squad busy but just to
be sure there will be no idle hours
for card playing and golf, Rickey
has set up a schedule of two meet-
ings a day, one before the work-
outs to discuss yesterday s games
and one after the drill.
The managers and players will
be freely criticised at those meet-
ings.” Rickey explained. "We want
to find out what we have and
playing ball is the best way "
The Brooklyn president said
that Pete Reiser s ailing right arm
was a mystery to all and that
even the hard-hitting outfielder
doesn't know what's wrong with
it. Reiser injured his throwing
arm in a service game last sum-
mer. Rickey said Reiser would give
his flipper a workout during
spring training before submitting
to any operation.
