Declaring he was “well pleased”
with the attitude of the school
board, Col. W. A. Castle returned
to Font Sam Houston, San An-
tonio today, after telling the
board of education the govern-
ment felt it was not properly
supporting ROTC officers here.
Colonel Castle, supervisor of
ROTC activities in five states,
appeared before.the board at a
special meeting last night. He
was to report today to Gen. E.
D. Winans, corps area commander.
Col. A. F. McLean, professor
of military science and tactics in
the schools here, appeared with
Colonel Castle at the meeting.
‘Discipline or Ruin.'
Appealing to the board to back
up Colonel McLean uncompromis-
ingly in his dealing with subor-
dinates, Colonel Castle declared
that the maintenance of proper
military discipline spelled effi-
ciency or ruin for the cadet
corps.
Most of the discussion centered
about the school ROTC band.
E. D. Crites was reappointed head
of the band last week over the
protest of Colonel McLean, who
accused Crites of disloyalty to
county, Val Verde,:is added.
The House has not yet finally
ROTC band as "the soul of the
corps.”
To Continue ROTC.
By splitting the band, the
school board woyld run the risk
of losing some of its ROTC allo-
rat Ion, he aald.
Colonel McLean said he asked
Colonel Castle to come to Fort
Worth to hotter famillarize new
members of the board with ROTC
operations.
Altho the Strayer report re-
fused to recognise ROTC drill as
of physical training value, the
board last week adopted a resolu-
tion announcing that the ROTC
would be continued in the schools.
Following discussion ' of the
ROTC, the board went into execu-
tive session to consider recom-
mendations of the Strayer report
on school finances.
Ceuntry demand for "tock
catnie lacked volume and the

TNGENIOUS farmers—they’re
A not crying about over-pro-
duction out in West Texas.
Instead, they have found
many clever ways to take up
the slack at home.
Farmers in Ochiltree County,
for instance, are planning to
use wheat for fuel this winter,
finding it cheaper than coal at
its present price.
For this they are getting a
special type of grate, D. A.
Bandeen, West Texas Chamber
of Commerce manager, said.
West Texas farmers in the
wheat areas are fattening thou-
sands of head of cattle with
ground whea which is the
cheapest possible feed under
present prices.

Home demonstration clubs of
Childress County are canning
wheat for use as food in place
of macaroni, rice, and other
cereals. After being allowed to
soak in water overnight, it is
salted and canned.
Also, several carloads of bred
gilts have been shipped into
Johnson County to Increase the
hog population to consume the
cheap feed crop.
To jump to other fnteretting
bits of West Texas news, did
you know that—
Helium gas from Amarillo
will float the world's largest
lighter-than-air ship, the dir-
igible Akron?
The helium plant at Amaril-
lo, the only one in the United
States, produced 1,000,000 cu-
bic feet of helium, running at
30 per cent capacity, in June.
