The sudden death of VIce-l'reddent
Thomas A. Hendricks at his home In
Indianapolis yesterday evening was
very great shock and surprise to the
country and will be sincerely regretted
by nil tho people. It Is true all have
pay this last debt of nature but when
man Ilka Mr. Hendricks dies there is
ways surprise and regret. He has oo-
cupled a prominent and honorable posi
tion In American politics and it can
aid to his credit that be was an honest
man and a pure man. Ills life has been
one of positive force and he has repre-
sented the principles of tho Democratic
party as but few other men have. Ills
course has been that of a typical Ameri-
can citizen and be climbed the heights
of political ambition steadily and surely
and occupied a place In tho hearts of his
countrymen that'was lasting and warm.
Ills publlo career has been varied Uov-

the greatest Statesmen of the times

that Is more generally observed by nil

ful for and should not forget the debt of
gratitude we owe to the Creator for his
ncllcent gift and blessings.

UKMiittL Nkw ids in his report of the
mount of money needed to Improve
Texas harbors speaks na follows nbout
Aransas I'ass: "Tim Improvement of

he estimated cost of completing It Is
20000 of which It 1 recommended

arc better results from the money ex-
pended at Aransas Pass than at any
point on the coast and If the

Tin: Corpus Chrlstl Culler does not
lake a happy view in Hie delay In rais-
ing tho proposed subscription to the
San Anlrnlo and Aransas I'ass llallroad
nd says: "Tho appeal to the county
for assistance In raising tho railroad bo-
s lins so far been disappointing. There
was reason to believe that the liberality
the stockmen would not be less than
000 and possibly $10000. The total
subscription from tho town and county
scarcely reaches 00000 and at this
figure It seems to have suddenly halted.
or the want of $10000 Corpus Chrlstl

lingness to drop the railroad proposi-
tion and let things Jog along In their
old tlmo wuys. What will be the re-
ult? l'osltlvely und emphatically the
road will tint be built to Corpus Chrlstl."
Many persons who woul 1 bo open In
tholr opposition of the Wnter-norka
oMilract have been deterred by the Idea
that there Is no remedy; that the con
tract Is binding in all Its monstrous ex-
actions. This belief was put forward by
the friends of the Company which goes
so far ns to publish a false assertion that
the courts of 14S0 had tlnully settled the
matter. In yesterday's I.lc.lir It was
shown that the matter was never settled
by the courts but pending action the
Company confessed its weakness by of
fering a compromise and tho peoples
mis-representatives acoeptcd tho same
thereby turning traitors to their trust.
There Is nut the slightest doubt that
had the Mayor and City Council acted In
thlx matter as a man would act In his
own private business the case would
liave reuohed Its llnal Issue on its merits.
There Is an old musty legend that In a
republic the public olllclals are public
servants bound to work for the Inter-
ests of the people but too often said
olllclals are publlo masters w hoso aim It
Is to betray the Interests of the people
on every opportunity. That said suit
was not prosecuted In the Interest of
the people the Limit can and will show
and it will seo that If treachery Is at
tempted In the pending questions on the
subject the traitors and their methods
will be fearlessly exposed. The Limit
has determined that water shnll be
served to the people and city at Its
minimum cost and It will succeed.
In ax article on Hebrow progress the
Chicago lntcr-Occan pays the following
tribute to that people: It says "Tho
platform or declaration of prlnclpl
adopted by tho National liabbinlcnl
Convention of the Itefonned Hebrew
Church at It's meeting nt I'lttsburg
Tuesday last Is n notable landmark In
the progress of that most remarkable
race the Jews. There Is a very large
clement among that people who are In
full sympathy with that progressive
movement large enough in fact to
make this mnnlfesto a landmark In his
tory. The fundamental principle laid
down Is that Judaism is n progressive
religion. Thsre are those In the Hebrew
Church as In It's great ollshoot the
Christian Church who maintain that
their religion is of such divine origin
that the only progress possible Is in
going back to primitive Ideas getting
rid of the accretions of human thought
Tho tendency of the day In the Chris
tlan Church Is toward the theory which
admits of progress and the name leaven
Is at work In the Hebrew meal .No
that the reform element has declared
Itsell It will be seen that between tho
Jews of that class and what Canon
Karrar referred to In his Ilrownlng lec
ture aa "the Church of the future" the
partition wall is thin hardly more In
deed than the ancient rlto of cli
cumclslon which Is Semitic In dls
tlnctlon from Aryan rather than
Jewish In Its distinction from Christian
It may be said that the Hebrew religion
Is on the theory of progress n growth
from the substitution by Abraham of
sacrlliclal lamb fur his own (on One of
the earliest forms of worship as far as
prehistoric facts can be ascertained
was tho sacrifice of the first-born child
The substitution being adhered to by
the descendants of that patriarch there
came to bo a "peculiar people" out of
which with other causts more or lei
occult grew a nation of farmers Instead
of shepherds and the reformers who
met In rabbinical council at 1'ltttsburg
tee In the laws given to that nation by
tho adopted son of Pharaoh's daughter
civil rather than a religious code deny
ing the binding nature of that coJe upon
the people In their dispensation. Ttc
only exception pointed out to thlsrnlo
of abrogation In the moral code or 10
commandments. The) reject ns posi-
tively dulrluienlcl all ceremonies which
do not elevate and sanctify tho life.
There Is no direct reference to the Sem
itic rite referred to but It Is probable
that It would be defended by even the
moro progressive among them on noil-
religious ground. The rejection of all
Mosalo and rabhlnl-al liws which regu-
late diet priestly purity and dress Is
explicit anil plaei d on the basis of hav-
ing originated in ages und under tho
Influence of Ideas altogether foreign to
their present mental and spiritual state.
There has been n good denl ol eiiort
ade to Chrlstlanlo tho Jews etpeolol-
ly In Knglnnd with most unsatisfactory
results. The piogresslvo movement can
not bo traced to any extent whatever to
such direct effort as evangellratlon. It
Is rather a purl of that tendency of our
century which Is mI marked In Uer-
many. It la safe to say that there were
no l'ollsh or llusslan Jews In the I'ltls-
burg convention and very likely every
one of the rabbis there present belong
to the Oermaii branch of the family.
Kvangelleal Christianity can boast n
Neander a Hebrew ot tho Hebrews jet
the greatest or Christian historians.
Many of I he great scholars and thinkers
ol Germany were or are Jews Includ
ing Splnora 111 philosophy ana Heine
;iietty. ltabbl lllrsch. n leaner in
this reform movement Is certainly one
of the most learned and eloquent of our
Chicago clergymen. The Jews are or-
tin criticised for being so clannish but
it Is to bo remembered that the Untied
States was tin llrst Christian country to
treat them with any degree of Justice
Ignoring In all our legislation any In-
vldlousraoo distinction. The example
of this republic has exerted a powerful
Influence In Knglnnd and on the conti
nent of Europe. Ancient relics of per
secution nro disappearing and lu the
light of Petersburg one may see the
prophecy of a day not far distant either
when thu last barrier of race prejudice
will bo obliterated."
