Arrive from San Francisco' i:t V
Saturday. November 21. 1885.
The country northwest or San Anto-
nio Is talking about a future railroad
connection and It la really high time our
people were taking some steps In the
natter.
Kkke trade agitation and the demon-
etlzatlon of silver will work about as
complete disaster to American business
and manufacturers as It Is possible to
concelre.
Tiik Paris Dally News says: "The
San Antonio I.iour Is a Hepubllcan pa-
per but very mildly so and with all
that Is the neatest etenlng dally that
comes to this olllce"
This dengue bus about run Its course
In Texas partly by reason of the late
frost and partly for the want of vic-
tims. Hut It hurt all lines or trade ex-
cept the drug business and since U Is
abating there is a noticeable increaso In
the How of business.
To-morrow Is Sunday and the churches
of the city stand with open doors ready
to receive every one that calls. San A n-
tonlo has a long list or eloquent and
earnest ministers and an hour will not
be spent amiss In listening to any one or
them.
Tiik Times says: "The partiality or
San Antonlans for oil lamps In prefer-
ence to gas Is very suggestive." It
could as well have added the preference
or the Times and Its delenso or tho un-
just extractions or the Water-works
Company Is also suggestive orthe power
behind the Times' throne.
The Chicago Inter-Ocean says: "Gal-
veston Is a city ot about :I3000 Inhabi-
tants and when the sun went down up-
on the day or the lire Its business men
had subscribed $31000 to the relief fund
orthe sufferers. It shows the good ma-
terlal or the people or Galveston. Such
people deserve prosperity and will re-
ceive It."
Mu. Dibble's opinion on tho subject or
the water-works published elsewhere
IntheLiaiiT Is a pointer to the Times
and that paper Is respectrully asked to
peruse It carefully as being one answer
to Its question of why somo remedy
has not been suggested by the Light.
Here It Is In plain words and It chal
lenges an argument.
The dally hotel arrivals are a fair In
dlcatlon or the great Influx or neonle
from all over the country who came to
San Antonio to spend the winter and
Improve their health and this Is one
reason why a great sanltanlum would
prove one or the best pnylng Invest
ments In the city. 1'eople want the
conveniences or a hotel with tho home
comforts.
J he Waco Examiner Is "down on"
tho dengue and says: "It won't do to
attempt to conceal the fact that Waco
has the dengue and has It bad but It
will do admirably to say that for the
three months the disease has prevailed
here the rate of mortality Is far less
than It has ever been for the same
length or time. Dengue does make Its
devotees feci thundering bad sure
enough but one ought to be satisfied
when he does not have to call on theun
dortaker to help him out or It."
Tiik Austin Dlspntch snys: "The
Han Antonio t.iniiT agent Is canvassing
Austin for n general write-up of this
city fiOOO copies of that paper to ho dls-
trlbed In Austin and 10000 In Han Anto-
nio Hays and Comal counties. Kvery
merchant and cltlren In Austin should
patrontzo tho I.ioiit In this large edi-
Tiik Scwcr Committee since therdld
not get n very satisfactory answer from
the Water-works Company might get
some pointers In tho lrgnl opinion re-
garding the contract with that company
and the city publlthul elsewhere. Sew-
ers will nuier be an established fact lis
long its the present company exists and
there Is no great ti'e In advocating them.
Tin: attention of the renders or the
I.loiiT Is called In tho opinion pub-
lished In to-day's paper from Mr.
I. I). Dibble on the iptesllon of
tho validity ir the contract between
the city and the Water-works Com-
pany. Mr. Dibble hits established n
well-earned reputation as a lawyer of
ability and one whose opinions nro re-
spected at all times and the I.hiiit asks
a oarcrtil reading or the cry practical
opinion published elsewhere fur It
shows what the I.iiuit has repeatedly
asserted that the contract between tho
city and tho Company wnsno onntractitt
all. This matter Is published for tho
benefit ol Ihe tax-payers of the city and
Uresis wltb tho Administration to take
the proper steps to stop the excessive
charges made against the city and Indi-
vidual consumers.
DtMi'.lj.' Mkiuc.u. .loi'it.v.ti. has been
recilvid by tho l.iciiir and It Is replcto
with much Interesting and practical
reading matter. A paper upon the
Dengue" by Dr. W..I. Hurt. Is ono of
tho best given to the publlo regarding
this disease hioauso It furnishes all tho
Information needed. The other nrtlcles
aro us readable and practlcnl and show
that Dr. K. Daniel ns editor. Is mak
ing the Medical Journal a most repre
sentative paper both for tho mcdlral
fraternity nnd tho publlo generally.
There Is n notion prevalent that medi
cal works and papers are published
for the doctors. Such Is not tho case
and tho l.imir repeats that two dollars
Invested In n year's subscription In the
Medical Journal will prove n most satis-
factory Investment to any ramlly.
Tin: I.u.iii'rt tiomlng holiday edlton
will eclipse) that or last year nnd all
critics pronounced that the acme of spe-
cial editions. Austin thanks to an en-
ergetic nnd vvlile-awnko agent or tho
I.iiuit will reap Jointly with San An
tonio In tho benefits to bo derived from
that particular paper. Special Issues
thoso that aro gotten up to show tho
advantages and the resources r n city
are nlwavs good Investments nnd pay
largely a direct and Indirect return to
thoso who patronlre them nnd the city
generally. Tho Houston l'ost or Tues-
day Issued a special eillton showing tho
advantages of Houston nnd of Ihe State
and already B00O copies have been mailed
to other States nnd the demand vv as not
all supplied. The I.inur never does
ytlilng by halves and tho special edi
tion will net only bo attractive nnd in-
teresting as regards Its contents but Its
typographical beauty will be without
blemish.
Tin: Houston Ago spens as follows
about Major Joe. Snjers: "Congress-
man Sayers tells the San Antonlans that
he Is very hopeful or getting an appro-
priation or money enough tollnlsh tho
Government building In San Antonio
and that he expects to put a shoulder to
the Aransas 1'ass appropriation wheel.
The general Impression Is that Con
gressman Craln is going to be tho most
elleotlve worker among the Texas Hep-
resentatlves but that Impression lias
been created by tho success that has
crowned his honest endeavors to sub-
stantiate honest Democrats for Radicals
n Federal offices. When Congress en
ters upon the regular duties or the ses
sion Joe. Sayers will probably come as
near as any man on the floor to doing
his rail duty to his constituents nnd tho
country. The Age has large expecta-
tions or Major Sayers."
Sknatou Alhrich of iihoda Island Is
reported as saying that ho believes the
hope of the Hepubllcan party In the fu-
ture lies In the agitation and advocacy
or protection. "The labor question" he
says "Is becoming Important how the
great masses or working people shall bo
made and kept contented. Through
Kcptibllcnn rule Willi protection In full
execution they had good wages and
plenty of work-. As tho country has
swung back toward tho Democratic
party things have changed. The reople
need education In the principle or pro-
tection as a sound dootrlne or states-
manshlp. The Hepubllcan party must
pusn it to tue rront nnd moke It the Is-
sue of Issues. I would not throw away
wnai tue enemy calls the bloody-shirt
Issue. Hut the party Is not wholly agreed
on that Issue as It Is on protection and
It should be secondary. With the tariff
question to the front there will be a dif
ferent result for the party than II hns
encountered In the late elections"
CONGIU'.SSMAN CHAIN of the Calvoatn
District" says the Washington corres-
pondent or the Cincinnati Times-Star
"Is ardent In his advocacy or what will
be a more satisfactory system or disburs-
ing the river and harbor appropriations.
ins views on tue subject are especially
Interesting rrom the fact that his dis-
trict takes In nearly the entire coast of
Texas extending rrom Galveston Hay
to the mouth of the lllo Grande nnd
about GOO miles up that river to Kagle
Tans. He says that the Government has
already spent a great deal of money
with a view or opening tho bnrs at lira-
zos Santiago Aransas l'ass 1'ass Ca-
ballo and at other places and only In it
rw cases have satisfactory results been
secured. Tho appropriations made for
the Improvements at the mouth or the
llraios have been he says practloally
wasted he says beoatise or their mea-
grencss. The effect of the 'Incomplete
work: there has been It Is alleged to
lessen the water's denth on the i.nr i.
stead or Increasing It. Despite the Tact
that a vast sum ot money has been ex-
pended on Qalvcston Harbor thero Is u
well-dellnid dlllercnci' of opinion ns to
the eflect of the supposed Improvement.
Friends of those uhu have n grab at tl.o
supposed appropriations contend that
the water has been deepened two feet
while publlo spirited olllrens or Galves-
ton aver tint there has been no percep-
tible Increase of water. "Under the
present dilblet system or appropria-
tions" said Congressman Craln to
your correspondent "a very largo
amount of public money Is wasted. It
would seem In me whenever a work Is
deemed of enough Importance to Justify
extending Government aid to complete
It that the entire amount or money ne-
cessary tn that end should ba appropri-
ated at once; or at least a sulllclent
amount to keep thn work going on con-
stantly from year to year until Its com-
pletion. In this way I believe n tangi-
ble result would he secured nnd there
would he true economy In the expendi-
ture Instead ol a wasteful squandering
of public funds. As a class United
States engineers area very competent
set of men nnd In thrit ellorts to secure
deep water on sand-drift bars nre un-
successful it Is not because of n tack or
ability on their part hut because or the
Injudicious distribution or money for
publlo Improvements. 1 say let the
Government first determine upon the ne-
cessity of an Improvement have n plan
and estimate of cost prepared and then
appropriate enough money to pay for
the work and place the amount subject
to the draft of engineers In charge."
Mr. Crnln Is of opinion that the Gulf
Const needs protection rrom tho attacks
of a possible enemy ns well as deep har-
bors. He proceeds on the ground that
ir Ihe Atlantic Coast hns reason to bn
