“And the new 2001-2002 Miss
Kendall County Fair queen is....”
All hearts stopped and the crowd
beneath the pavilion drew a collec-
tive breath just seconds before Leah
Smith was pronounced the winner.
For some, it was a sigh of relief as
the weather had held up just long
enough for the pageant to take place.
For others, they were glad for it to
be over.
A healthy response from the crowd
filled the outdoor facility as the last
of the Kendall County Fair and
Rodeo court had been announced.
Smith, a senior at Boerne High
School this year, was a first timer to
the event and walked away with it
all.
“I was told to be myself and don’t
have a prepared speech,” she said
the next day prior to the annual
shopping trip the court takes for new
clothes — matching of course.
“I was told to say what came from
my heart,” Smith said.
In a unique turn of events and
probably a first-ever at the Kendall “I knew Leah pretty well because
