As we leave Gunnison City our train fol-
lows the caurso of the Gunnison river
which Hows almost iintrammelcd by. na-
ture's barriers until It reaches the moun-
tains of granite several thousand feet In
depth. This Is the entrance to the Illack
Canyon of the Gunnison whose Indei-
crlbable grandeur has never half been
told. Having escaped from the prison
like lloynl Gorge my courage arose and
trusting that the engineers of the Den-
ver and illo Grande had made an outlet
of nature left none In we went where
powder and drill had made room for a
train to barely creep br the gigantic col-
umns of stone that overshadowed the
narrow and turbulent stream.
As It enters a crevice between two
high shoulders of mountains nn both
sides Its width contracts and for 20 miles
this daring stream has a constant war-
fare with the soldler-IIke mountains for
an outlet In Its Journey tothesea. .Some
times 11 is almost cioseu up uy tue Huge

hanging cllir then again lu Us rapid
headlong course It breaks In frantic fury
against the ledges and age-worn walls

ing torrents over the rocky bed.
Ail the time Its howling deafening
roar Is heard above the terrific noise of
the train as It thunders on In Its narrow
postwar. Uetwean the echoing walls of
red and blackened granite whose top-
most crowns break the pellucid air In
tho sunlit realms of a violet sky where
forests of pine treei swaying lo fro by
the tierce mountain winds tnelr beauti-
ful green branches waving as a baton
for the gentle songs of toe birds that
flit back and forth like arrows across
this great gulf ol air their sweet notes
blending In symphony with the dying
echoes of a roaring stream 2003 feet be-
low. Mountain grasses In grayish green
aro sometimes seen flecked here and
there with flowers of richest hue and
fravrant odors.

In floods of brightness nnd unlike tho
tcdness and gloom that pervades the
lioyal Gorge the Illack Canyon of the
Gunnison Is an enchanting place where
the mind loves to dwell 011 the grand
