Business and Dwelling
Construction on
Steady Gain.
Spring is here and so are new
huildiqg campaigns. Construction in
Sau Antonio as well as in every sec-
tion of her trade territory is showing
a large increase with the approach of
the summer months. The Winter Gar-
den district will do more new build-
ing this year than at any time in its
history according to reports from Cry-
stal City a leading town of that rich
irrigated farming district at San An-
tonio's very door.
New homes and business buildings
are constantly being started while
lumber yards of Crystal City are do-
ing a large business quite a number
of buildings are being erected with
hollow tile and this material prob-
ably will be used in most of the build-
ings in the business district.
Among the new buildings that have
just been completed in Crystal City
are as follows: J. E. Peel has finished
two business houses one of which is
now occupied by Harkey’s law office
and Peels barber shop. The other is
being used by tbe Central Power
company .who have opened up a down-
town office where they have on dis-
play a fine showing of electrical goods.
STORE ADDITION.
Mount and Gibson have completed
the new addition to their store. Don
V. Moore has just finished one of the
most attractive garages and filling sta-
tions in the Winter Garden District
This building is of modem design
and contains storage space for
cars in addition to the filling station.
Monkhouse and Son have completed
a moving picture theater which is of
modern design and i« 25 by 100 feet
in size. It is one of the finest build-
ings in town and is ready for occu-
pancy.
The M allis Lumber company* recent
ly completed a large building con-
sisting of a hardware store and lum-
ber sheds. Two good business houses
have been completed by K. W. Alger
one of them is now occupied by the
postoffice and the other by a cold
dnnk confectionary store.
The new $27000 addition to the
school house has just been completed

FoOOO school house for the Mexican
children has also been completed.
M. Longera and son and V. Davila
have each completed business houses
in the north extension of the busi-
ness section near the spinach loading
platforms. The new home of the
Zavala county Chevrolet company is
nearing completion and will be one
of Crystal City’s finest business
houses. The building is of hollow
tile construction is 100 feet long and
50 feet wide with plate glass front-
। It is modern id design and a big ad-
। dition to the business part of Crystal
City.
NEW GARAGE.
| Just north of the new Chevrolet
headquarters Mr. Edison of Eagle
Pass has purchased lots and has com-
menced the erection of a garage and
filling station. This will also be a
| building of the better class. At the
I northeast corner of town M. L.
। Harkey has a filling station under
। construction at the intersection of
the Carizzo Springs Big Wells and
Uvalde roads.
| In the residential section of Crystal
j City there is also much building go-
! ing on. Irl Taylor is building a
: modern bungalow on lots adjoining |
J the new home of W. F. Cook. E. L.
| Addison has just completed a home
1 that is a credit not only to Crystal I
। City but to the whole Winter Garden
I District. Mr. Thompson of the
Crystal City Drug company is building
a nice home in the east part of town.
Mrs. W. O. Day is buildihg a mod-
ern apartment bouse which will be
a big addition to that part of town
and as rent houses are badly needed
the town would be glad to see other
houses of this kind built.
Garland Davis has just finished a
nice little home and Jessie Lott is
building a cottage of several rooms.
Harold Harkey is building a bunga-
low which will be among Crystal City's
prettiest homes when completed. The
I new home of 8. 8. Moore has just
I been completed and is also a home
lof the better class. In the Mexican
j |>art of the town there are about 25
i houses under construction. In the
■ new Mexican subdivision which was
! opened less than two months ago
there are more than 20 neat little
homes and several business houses.
At River Spur about two miles from
Crystal City a new settlement is
spring up and several buildings are
under construction there.
MANY DEALS
Real estate num are busy and many
new prospectors are coming in. and
many deals are reported. Joe Evaus
has purchased four residence lots and
expects to build a new home soon. F. |
T. Autrey has purchased a business I
lot from L. A. Lowe and is planning
to build a modern restaurant and
rooming house in the near future.
Two lots adjoining this lot were sold
to Sherman Brothers of Kansas Citv. i

pany of San Antonio and is being built by General Contractors Walsh and Burney. Plumbing and heating by
Hill Bros and Company Waco; Electric wiring by Martin Wright. San Antonio; Elevators by American Elevator
Company through Martin Wright Electric Company. The structure will have M rooms in four stories. It will
cost nearly $lOOOOO. It is fireproof.

PROGRESSING
ON CLUB
LAREDO. Tex.. March 27. —Work
at the Laredo Country Club is prog-
ressing nicely and the golf course will
soon be completed. This one feature
will bring many people to Laredo dur-
ing the spring of this year and wid
furnish much enjoyment.
The roads to tbe club grounds are
in good shape and roads are being
cleared and graded throughout the
1200 acres of the property. A bridle
path for horseback riding that will
be nine miles in length is also being
constructed. This will furnish real
pleasure to many people who love
riding.
The big lake has been stocked for
some time with bass and fishing will
soon be one of the sports of the
Laredo Golf Country Club. Boating
fishing and bathing will become popu-
lar Laredo entertainments.
The drive for new stockholders was
| started in the latter part of January
1 and today there are 110 new stock-
i holders. Tbe list will be closed at
! 200 and those who want to make a
1 real investment are still able to get
I in at the par value $lOO.
The Laredo Country Club through
its committee on construction of
buildings and grounds has made
many improvements in the past two
months and they have now started
on the plans and specifications for
the permanent club building. George
Marshall is the chairman of this
committee and he is one of tbe busy
men of Laredo.
The Larodo Country Club owns
more than 1200 acres of ground just
out of the northeast city limits which
has a commanding view.
S4N ANGELO WILL
BUILD FINE HOSPITAL
SAN ANGELO March 27.—Pre-
liminary plans for the early erection
here of a modern fireproof hospital of
perhaps three stories are to be launch-
ed at once • according to a decision
reached by the executive board of the
Concho Valley Baptist Association.
The building will be on tbe corner of
East Harris avenue and South Mag-
dalone street. A two-story frame
structure on part of tbe site now serv-
ing as the San Angelo Baptist hos-
pital likely will be converted into a
ward for convalescents and a nurses'
home.
Assistance in completing the cam-
paign may be given by the Rev. D. R.
Pevoto pastor of the First Baptist
church at Brenham who conferred
with the association executives. The
Rev. Mr. Pevoto was one of the found-
ers of the Baptist hospital at Hous-
ton and was its superintendent for ten
years.

VICTORIA Tex. March 27.—The
continuation of Victoria's present un-
precedented growth was assured Satur-
day by the closing of a deal for the
sale of an important piece of property
in the heart of tbe main business dis-
trict of the city and the adoption of
plans for the extensive improvement
of the property by the erection of mod-
ern buildings to house three leading
local firms.
While tbe parties concerned in the
deal are not ready for the publication
of the details it is known that tbe
purchase prire of the property and
the estimated cost of its improvement
involve a consideration of fully $BO-
000.
Included in the new construction
will be magnificent quarters for a
l theater. The theater will have a 50-
foot lobby and an auditorium with t
■ I seating capacity of fully 1000 giving
. Victoria its largest playhouse and one
. jof the most modern theater buildings
: in the country for a city the size of
this. It is understood that a large
i firm owning a chain of moving picture
' shows has made a proposal to take
i over the project and have a local man
i manage the theater but it has not been
I accepted. Victoria now has two well
' managed moving picture shows the
■ Princess and Victoria theaters. The
i contract was let a few days ago tor a
beautiful new building for the Victoria
theater on the site of its present quar-
ters on East Constitution street.
The deal that was closed Saturday
was one of half a dozen or more equal-
ly important real estate transactions
that have been pending for some
weeks. It is reported that three
other transfers involving approximate-
ly $lOOOOO wfH be consummated with-
in the next few days.

BRADY BRICK PLANT
BRADY Tex. March 27.—A stock
company is being formed which con-
templates tbe erection of a $50000
brick plant at Brady
A geological survey made during the
past months by an industrial chemist
J. D. McKee of San Antonio dis-
closed that McCulloch county has sev-
eral valuable deposits of fine clay in
the immediate vicinity of Brady. The
plant will specialize in the production
of face brick.
An experiment by Mr. McKee shows I
that the clay begins to vitrify at 1800
degrees Fahrenheit and can be finish-
ed at 2100 degrees Fahrenheit which
is 200 degrees lower than the average
temperature required by othr brick
factories in the United States.
