The Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
Block after block bad been leveled to
the ground and the grandest edifices lit
Chicago served but a few moments ns
fuel for the nwful demon whose llery
tongue would dnrt out from opposite
walls across open spaces nnd squares
nnd In nn Instant opposite buildings
were In tlames and amidst all the ex-
citement the yelling of enrtmen the
screams or the flying citizens the
whistling of the engines and the roar of
the flames could be heard the groans of
the Insurance agents who calculated
with lightning rapidity the losses of
their respective companies. It now be-
gan to be whispered nbout thnt the
wind had changed nnd that the remain-
der or the city wns doomed und there
wns little doubt thnt inanv lives would
be sacrificed. A crowd of excited mer-
chants were offering Immense sums to
enrtmen who seemed to believe that the
demand generally regulates the value of
an article. Loud calls for help were
heard from above nnd looking up the
people saw n sight that froze
their very blood with horror.
Upon the cornlco ot the roof
standing on Its very edge were live hu-
man beings afterwards ascertained to
be a family consisting ol father nnd
mother nnd three benutiful daughters.
Just think reader lire on all sides
every retreat completely cut-off no time
to loose. My God what a position; only
a choice between two frightful deaths
standing there In the awful presence or
eternity gnzlng upon the faces of his
wife nnd little ones how must the rather
have felt and the loving mother. Ah!
those who have never been so situated
can never know how many thoughts can
be crowded Into a moment's space. The
crowd below were eager to save them
but were entirely powerless to not.
Finally some one hurriedly brought a
feather bed and laid It upon the side-
walk and the nngulshed father tried to
drop a eoreamlng child upon II Alas a
dull sickening thud and another and
another and nil were lying dead lu the
street uetow. i ue man wuobo ngure
was now surrounded by lire slowly
lowered himself over the edge of the
cornice and swung to nnd fro In a vain
endeavor to reach the top of the next
wtnuow cornice oui no tie laoKen over
two feet. But hold! Ston! He has
dropped and has successfully held on to
the shutter. Yes! Seel Four stories
from the ground and the ground
nnd the windows In this build-
ing bnve no projections. Hear the
nn on uie root crucK nnu me lire roar
within. His feet are burning he soreams
and lowers himself again over the cor-
nice his body swings to nnd fro like a
pendulum he throws hack his head he
screams for help ns lie can hold on no
longer. The throng of people grow sick
as they see his lingers slipping from the
edge and bis expression will be stamped
on loeir memories lor years many
turned nwny unable to look upon such n
speotacle. Those that did saw a white
tlgure drop like a meteor to the stone
pavement beneath nnd then the terrible
family tragedy was ended. Many unfor
tunate people were no uouui -urpris-u
In like manner but as they lived on back
streets no one In thehurrylng multitude
noticed them and they were lost with no
one to record the horror. I would say.
to the public that if I have entertained
them I am thankful and If any one
should oall on me at No. 12 Soledad
street through friendship or business
they will find J M. Emerson equally at
their service.
