An Increasing Evil.
To the noble husband or to the Mint
nml loving wife It Indent seems strange
t lint any man nml wire can possibly hate
suck domestic differences as to volun-
tarily Invoke the aid of counsel to ob-
tain papers of perpetual separation and
yet we And these much to bo deplored
occurrences are continually taking
place In all parts and sections of our
land. The sail fact Is well authenti-
cated that each advancing year records
an Increaso in the number of applica-
tions for papers grantlngdlvorcc. some-
times the appeal comes from the hus-
band and sometimes from the wife. All
sorts of allegations are made from the
most trivial neglect tothe mostoutrnge-
ous and cruel treatment. Very oflen
both are at fault and generally In such
cases It Is a mercy to both to grant pa-
pers of separation especially where
they both refuse to remain together and
treat each other with proper considera-
tion and I would further say that very
often it is a great blessing to the sur-
rounding neighbors. In very many
cases where divorces are applied
for It Is entirely the fault of
one party. To discuss the many reasons
(real or Imaginary) that cause people to
entirely set aside and forget the sacred
marriage vows would of themselves All
a volume. From the experience and
after-life of many friends and acquain-
tances I venture to say that as a rule di-
vorced people are nfterward unfortunate
and If the reader will remember all such
cases that have come under his or her
notice I think they will concur with me
In this conclusion. We often hear the
remark made in speaking of a recent
marriage that It was a love match and
we Instinctively honor the young couple
who Join hands and hearts with no other
motive save love and mutual attraction.
How dlllerent where one or both swear
to he true to each other amid all earthly
trials well knowing as they answer the
nan of God those solemn questions
that they have spoken falsely. Yes In
their own hearts (perhaps cleverly
concealed) they know that they
do not love each other as should
husband and wife and In many
cases each loves another and yet
from mercenary motives they sell
themselves for position or pecuniary ad-
vantage or both. A good and dutiful
wife frequently becomes dissatisfied and
Unhappy because she feels that her hus-
band neglects the home. If a man were
to occupy a woman's position for n short
period tie would realize how happy and
contented a true woman Is when her
husband brings home some little present
and says. "My dear I have a little gift
for you." We know of nothing that
pleases the ladles better than some tasty
little Item In the Jewelry line and as
the times at present are very hard we
would advise onr friends and the public
generally who are in need of anything
In bis line to call on our old friend J. M.
Kmcrson of No. 12 Soledad street. .Mr.
Kraerson Is selling forfeited pledges at a
slight advance on the amount loaned
and a buyer seldom leaves his house
without pnrchaslng. You should re-
member that people for the past year
have been compelled to pledge personal
articles that were bought during more
prosperona times from ilrst-clas houses
lu the city and elsewhere. Mr. Kmerson
ays he will not refuse n reasonable of-
fer for any article In stock. Call and see
him as he will be glad to see you
whether you purchase or not.
