Monday September 22 1884.
Atf editorial In tho New York Sun last
week read as follows : "We think Clevo
land Is beaten."
The Independents In Texas are quite
numerous out tueir power so rar in tue
East lias not been felt.
The day is past when live business
men expect to make a success of any
enterprise without advertising liberally
In the newspapers.
A roiNTEit to Wash Jones: Don't bear
down too heavy on the llepubllcan par
ty In your speeches If you want the
votes of Republicans.
DKLEOA'raa of the Uexar county Dem
ooratlp convention were eleoted on Sat
tirday night nnd the worklngmen will
have a lively time getting their canal
dates before that august body.
That last batch of the Fitber-MulU
gun letters correspondence between Mr.
lllatne and those parties seem to hare
proven a very serious boomerang to tho
Democracy. Mr. Blaine states that his
onlydeiIre Is that every voter In the
United States will read the letters for
himself and such being the case they
wlll not bo able to serve their purpose In
an attempt to Injure hltn.
Tim Waco Examiner snys: "San
Antonio doesn't seem to be going ahead
on her Aransas 1'aas road with much
Ylm. l'erbaps she objects to moving
the Alamo to the Gulf." If the Exam-
iner can suggest any means whereby
the preliminary work can be Ignored
It Is HVely the enterprise will go ahead
In a manner to suit It. Engineers are
now locating the route and when they
get through with their work the real
buslniss will be pushed ahead
To iika! tho generality of Texas
papers one would think the negro as an
clement In politics was entirely super-
fluous and his volo of no consequence
but It will detract nothing from the situ-
ation to mention the little Incident
wherein an enterprising colored gentle-
man named Sublctt approached tbo
numerous candidates In Cooke county on
the ground that he represented n largo
oolored organization and that they
wanted to build a hall and then ho would
modestly strike the candidate for a sub-
scription and tbo promptness with
which the request was granted Is said to
he something wonderful Mr. Sublctt
accumulated about f 10 and then It was
discovered that he was an Impostor of
the blackest kind and this by the way
Is no reflection on his color and his hall
and his organization existed only In his
Imagination and the Sheriff collared
him and run him to the county Jail but
It Is doubtful If the candidates will ever
get back the money. Tbo moral how-
ever Is obvious.
It m gratifying to ilnd among the
many expressions of doubt and Indiffer-
ence to the success of tho proposed Gulf
road tho following from tho llrackctt
News which Is truly arprcolated. The
News says.: "Wc are glad toscothat
many of tho people of Son Antonio are
favoring the San Antonio and Aransas
Vats rallaord with mora substantial
backing than words of commendation.
San Antonio Is our metropolis nnd we
rejoice In her prosperity and sincerely
hope that In a short time the road will
be completed and trains running to tho
Gulf. The attempt that somo few of
the citizens are making to throw cold
water on the scheme and using their In-
fluence against the movement Is greatly
to be condemned though In this case It
seems to have resulted only In n shower
bath and the determination to have tho
rood Is stronger In consequence. The
people of San Antonio havo tho good
wishes of the people of this entire sec-
tion for the success of tbelrundcrtaklng."
The wrongs of worklngmcn have been
the theme of many songs and many
flights of eloquence and the working-
men themselves have always been loud-
cBt In their denunciation of tho profes-
sions and the schemes of lawyers and
nborncd legislators. A few weeks ago
a movement was set on foot by tbo
worklngmen of San Antonio wherein
they were to cut loose from the old-time
party political wire workers and place
before the people men who were of them
nnd for them. After a series of meet-
ings the movement culminated In nom-
inating a couple of lawyers men good
enough no doubt in their profession
but whose legal experience is of a qual
ity that would be classed tinder the head
of tender and fresh. The entire pro-
ceeding would be comical If It did not
carry with It a moral showing that after
all that the great American worklngman
wns a gray of the most positive kind
when pitted against tho cunning nnd
line Italian bands of a few lawyers. Dut
the result of the meetings has defeated
their purpose and nlready they see how
ridiculous the whole thing is and these
self same worklngmcn are ready to bolt
the creations of their own making tor
better nnd worthier men.
AtLUiuxa to the Flshcr-Mulllgan let
tcrs Just given to the country the New
York Tribune says:
lite new nubllcatlon embraces that
very letter of October 21 1871 which
jur. itiaine nas ior eigne years uecn ac-
cused of suppressing. As the Sun
showed with creat clearness the oft re
iterated charge was reduced at last to
this one letter which was named In Mul-
ligan's memorandum but which Mr.
limine declared was not in tue vac kit ire
received and publicly read by him. Con-
tinually the 'limes tue Post nnd other
inpers nave repenteu mat .nr. jiiatne
led. and had deliberately sunnressed
this letter. Vet now the blundering
rage of the tallied accusers produces It
from their own stock and makes one
thing clear : lClgnt years Mulligan has
seen Mr. llialne falsely accused of sup-
pressing this letter and has known all
the time that the charge wns false be-
cuubg ue( ueiu in uis possession tus
liruui. let no uoe ivcih uhck mat prooi
and sllentlr allowed the lie to iro on. do.
Ing Its dishonest work nnd thus has
made that He bis own In order to black-
en the character of Mr. Illalne. In the
light ot this fact who should now be
believed: Mr. Illalne who told the truth
or ids accusers self-convicted of false-
hood? And why was this letter then
suppressed ? Ilecatiee as It now proves
I'lsher and Caldwell had failed to make
good pledges upon which Mr. Illalne had
borrowed $23000 for their benellt.
Not one of Ills letters not one of llin
letters to him be It observed contains
nny hint or trace of abuse of his posi-
tion aa Speaker or as member of Con-
gress. Neither Mulligan nor Fisher
ever charged him with any dishonest or
improper act. In all the transactions
be was an honorable gentleman and he
was In the hands of sharpers. What
has the nubile to do with the business
relations of Mr. lilalne and Mr. Fisher?
Nothing since titer do not concern his
olllclal conduct In any particular nor
his personal Integrity. Tne publlohas
Judged them rightly. Eight years ago
the worst that could be said about these
transactions was said and the people
hearing both sides sustained Mr. Illalne
as titer do now. f rom that day to this
nubile confidence in him hna been irrnw.
Ing stronger publio regard for hltn
