Tme partiality felt by Colonel llartow
for San Antonio Is a proof or Ills good
taste and level-headednest.
The address of the commlttto regard-
ing tho situation of the Gulf road should
be heeded and every dollar possible
should bo subscribed towards the enter-
prise. Saveiu will hardly get to Congress
this trip. It will not be the funeral of
the Upsonltes consequently they will
not wear mourning or go Into the weep-
ing business.
Tub 1'ort Worth Gazette hat so far
shown no disposition to eat a mess of
crow. Its pluck is worthy of all praise.
The Gazette has not freely given In Its
adhesion to Governor Ireland & Co.
That J-osoya street bridge will have
to go. The City Counell have been
guilty of a lit of generosity that wat
not generous and established a bad pre
cedent aside from any conditions Im
posed
Texas Simos with that extreme
wickedness which characterizes It re-
marks that Cleveland'! moral record Is
n blank. Democrats do not care ft fig
tor the moral standing of their candi-
dates provided they can pick up votes.
The nomination of Ireland developed
the fact that a good many newspapers
in Texas belong to the "mo too" class.
They wilted in the twinkling of an eyo
and discovered that Ireland had made
the best Governor Texas has ever had.
The Indianapolis Sentinel In Its suit
with Mr. Maine hat filed a demurrer to
the petition and if It It overruled will
llln an answer and endeavor to ovade
the libel on the ground that the article
was not published through malice.
The Galveston Newt Is outherodlng
Herod In Its advocacy of Ireland and
goes so far at to say the objections
which were raised to Ireland In 1SS2 no
1 longer exist. If the News It honest and

Is AbMosr every county In Western
Texas where the Itepublloan vote here-
tofore cut no ilgure In the returns
there Is great defection from the Democ-
racy owing to tho tariff question and
the attitude of the wool men until It la
not altogether Impossible to elect an
opposition ticket. The timet have been
changing very rapidly as llkcwlso have
the Milcrs and all that Is needed It a
little organization.
Tut: Issne this year In llexar county
will be the l'cople versus the King. The
people aro resolved to have a hand In the
cliolco of candidates for the county offi-
ces anil to give the ring a black eye.
The Issue will he well dellned and clean
cut and those who champion the ring
will spend tho future In ashes and sack-
cloth In the bitter agonlci of unavailing
remorse. A citizens' ticket Is ft fixed
fact and what It more It can be tri-
umphantly elected by the real people.
Wash Jones' land policy It defined In
the following which Is given by a News

A ronnuroxDEST In tho Express from
New Laredo In commenting on n news
Item In the I.ioiit as to General Pacbeco
holding the olllce of Governor In the
States of Morelnt and Chihuahua says
that he Is only G overnor of Morelas. As
to tho truth of his being Governor of
Morelas we cannot vouch as wo got
our Information from Mexican newspa-
pers but we do know that be was elect-
ed Governor of the State of Chihuahua
and that but a few daya ago some of the
leading citizens of that State gavo him a
congratulatory banquet In the City of
3Iexlco. General Carlos 1'ancheco Is
now Minister of I'ubllo Workt under
the Gonzales Government and It a citi-
zen of Chihuahua.
H'k ark happy to announce that tho
farce of "Much ado about nothing" has
been ended. Governor Ireland has laid
aside his pot of war paint and counter-
manded the order to rub up his trusty
but rusty tword. The State Itangers
will not march to Galveston to wreak
summary vengeance on Commissioner
Spann and the Democratic newspapers
will cease to breathe threatenlngs and
slaughter agnlnst tho United States.
There Is no danger offt war breaking
out between Governor Ireland ncd the
United States and those who took tlmo
by the forelook and fled into the mes-
qulte brush to nvold the dreaded con-
scription can now return and sit under
their own vine and fig tree with none
to make them afraid. Peace prevails
upon tho Brazos and all Is quiet on the
"Colorado. Governor Ireland Is safe from
arrest. Let them sing tho dox-
ology. The dismissal of the charge
against Governor Ireland has sadly
upset the Democrats who had made
arrangements for a first-class howl.
Tnu great drawback to new enter-
prises is to be found in the extreme dull
condition of trade and the apparent
scarcity of money which probably is one
reason the capitalists have so far with-
held their liberal support to the Gulf
road. Hut It is a fact that business
makes business and that times will not
be Improved if the present selfish spirit
Is followed up. On this subject and
seeing ourselves as others see us the
following from the San Angelo Times-
Standard may point a moral: "Mr.
William S Veok received a letter yes-
terday from a prominent citizen of San
Antonio that speaks dcsparlngly of the
present condition of trade In that city.
Business houses and stores for rent
trade dull and people leaving for other
localities. San Antonio has only her-
self to thank for loss of trade and conse-
quent stagnation of business. A little
push and energy on the part of her citi-
zens would have established railroad
communication with this whole section
and she would now be reaping her share
of the trade that fills our streets with
teams and keeps our merchants busy
from daylight till long after dark. Abi-
lene Is now a dangerous rival of San
Antonio as a wool market and where
men sell they are apt to buy. In the
letter referred to the writer stated that
lately a flock of well graded sheep num-
bering about COOU sold for no cents per
head near Eagle l'ass."
It n notorious that the prominent
Democrats of Texas who refused to bow
their necks to receive the yoke of the
ring are to be excluded from the honors
and emoluments of olllce. The fact is
they are regarded as traitors to Democ-
racy. Upson Marlon Martin A. W
Terrell Judge Flemmlng etc. hare
been thrust Into outer darkness and laid
upon the shelf by the ring. A. W. Ter-
rell Is one of the'best stump speakers In
Texas and as thoroughly posted but
the ring Democrats passed him by and
selected Major Brackenridge as Elector
In this district who has no experience
In the political arena. What obliga-
tions do Upson Terrell Marlon Martin
Judge Flemmlng llartow etc. owe to n
party which disrates and proscribes
them without a hearing? They are not
recognized as worthy of promotion In
the Democratlo party of Texas. If they
"lack gall to make oppression bitter"
they will bare their hacks to receive the
stripes of the party whip and rejoice in
their political martyrdom but If they
have the proper resentment for unmer-
ited contumely and the proper Inde-
pendence they will tpurn the yoke of
the ling. The public Interest of Texas
would be promoted by breaking down
the machine which controls the Demo-
cratlo party at at present organized
and reinvesting the people with that
control over public oOIcers which right-
fully belongt to them. This revolution
must come sooner or later and the soon-
er the better for the people.
