Tin: cholera nt Toulon nnd Marseilles
la becoming worse nnd many people are
leaving those elites.
Tiik JIandall and Morrison combina-
tion as a Presidential ticket would bo a
straddle of tbe tarlir question Hint
would bo more than blind.
Jp nil! cholera w Mch Is now agitating
tlio people of'i'oulon should happen to
make the United States n social call It
would add to the general excitement of
this Presidential year.
Tiik fenco cutting In the Indian Ter
ritory seems to be for the purpose of
opening up the old cattle trails which
had been fenced up by syndicates who
oro endeavoring to get a foothold tlicro
as cattle kings.
The fence cutting that Is now being
done Is not that nny principle Is at stake.
but Is tho act of some scoundrelly Yan-
dal who should bo serving tho State In
tho penitentiary and he Is deserving of
no sympathy at the hands of the publlo
at large.
Tin: San Angela Standard says:
"Whenbrowslnganiongst our exchanges
we lienve a sigh of relief as wo pick up
the San- Antoxio Limit. The highest
compliment we can pay It Is to state the
fact that our scissors often mutilate It
beyond recognition."
Sixator Coke Is the latest Texan who
lias been mentioned In connection with
the Vice Presidency on tbe Democratic
ticket but It is simply a huge chunk of
tally and will amount to nothing else
Texas Is too solidly Democratic to make
such an event possible.
'lint movement to erect a building at
the New Orleans fair in which to make
the Texas exhibit Is a good one. nnd
should meet with a liberal and hearty
response from all. In that way Texas
could display her grand resources
to advantage and make a showing in
overy way creditable to tho State and
the people.
A Baltimoiu: man recently suicided
and left ft note to his wife giving his
reasons for the rash step and said ho
would come back every night and haunt
the house In which she lived. Hut he
cunniueraieiy Bigneu ms note "your
loving husband." He must have meant
It for a bluff as at last accounts his
guoBt had not put In an appearance.
The Tammany opposition to Cleve-
land In Xew York would have less effect
than the opposition created by his acts
In vetoing the Elevated railroad bill. re.
duclng fares and keeping millions of
uoiinrs out of the hands of the corpora.
Hons. Ills veto was a blow nt the work.
Ing people and at once made him a most
unavailable candidate for the PresI
tienoy.
Just who wrote thl Item I. i-
but he had a proper idea of grim huuior
when ho said: "The Democratic party
i'icu 10 ue lossea about upon a ten
pesiuous ocean of doubts nnd fears. W
see some of Its great leaders eager for a
high protective tariff and others of Its
leaders as eager for free trade. Hnr-.Ii l
the excitement over this Issue that no
attention whatever Is paid to the old
sign which adorns one end of the mill.

annua llnnnixa murdered Dr. llara-
lall a few days ago in Fort Worth In
cold blood and on Sunday last he was
apprehended and for fear a mob would
call on Urn the omcers took him to the
Sherman Jail It looks nowadays that
the Jails and prisons of the country have
no terrors for ovll doers and that their
greatest fear when they commit some
dastardly crime Is that the ofllcers will
not put them In n strong Jail and keep
them there. The blind shonlil l rnii.i
from the eyes of Justice in order that
bus may see the wrongs committed in
. her name.
O.v the subject of the WorM'a C.I- h.
lloston Commercial Bulletin says: "New
Orleans Is peculiarly situated for a largo
exposition of this kind. It will draw
toward us the 'business men of Mexico
nnd Central America. Then again: the
South detcnes It. Its Imslneri men are
naklng herculean efforts to develop that
part of our great continent. Wo all
gain by our efforts. Our country will
be richer and stronger when the Expo
sition Is over nnd tho visitors have all
returned to their homes to study over
the Immense resource of the great un-
developed South."
Tiik (lollnd Guard favors San Anto
nio's efforts to secure the Gulf road and
says: "Snn Antonio still wants to own
nnd control n railroad to the Gulf. The
movement recently agitated In the Ala-
mo city was to build the road to Aran
sas Pass. Over $200XI00 was subscribed
to the smck.biit we are told this amount
was raited by men of (malt means with
profiled of bankers and other wenllliy
men taking stock. Wo would have
more confidence In Snn Antonio building
the road If her tnonled men had been
the llrst tu subsrrlbe tothe capital stock
We are not disposed to discourage tho
enterprise however and hope the San
Antonlnns may succeed this time."
Tiik Milwaukee Sentinel speaking
editorially says of Carl Helium "He is
natural-born conspirator who takes to
revolution ns naturally ns n duck takes
to water. Ho was a political refugee
from ids native land on nccount of his
complicity with the revolt oflSIS. while
yet a student In tho university nnd tho
only wonder Is that ho did not Join the
Confederates In 1SG1. To his other po-
litical heresies he adds that of free trade
nnd that alono would be sufllclcnt to In-
duce him to oppose lllalnonnd Logan on
the present Itepubllcan platform unless
he .financial ability of tho campaign
committee proves to be sufficiently
strong to overcome Mr. bchura a con-
scientious scruples."
Tai-maw In a recent sermon on "lloss-
Ism" observes : ''At the present time
It Is only a question of ofllces. The Re-
publican party In power with the offi-
ces naturally wants to keep them. The
Democratic party out of power natur-
lly wants to get power and get the
oftlces. The so-called Independents of
tho itepubllcan party dlssntislled be-
cause they have not received enough
from tho Itepubllcan crib nro hoping
that the Democratic bowl will be so full
that from the overflow they may catch
something in their cup ; while I have to
tell all such persons that they had bet-
ter not be disappointed for they will
net cr get so much ns a spoonful of pop
from tbe Democratlcbowl. That party
after a privation of 21 years cannot'be
blamed If they keep all they get. Abso-
lutely nothing but a question of offices.
The old lion of national strcngtn is cov
ered all over with green bottle files
sucking the life blood from neck nnd
Hanks nnd the llrst Tuesday In .Novem
ber the old lion of our national strength
may shako Itself tcrrlllcally and another
set of green bottle tiles but more hun-
gry will take their place. Do not stand
agape ns to what will happen next. Go
about your honest every day business.
Do not believe the political bureaus that
deolaro that everything Is In peril.
There Is no more danger that this Gov
ernment Is going to pieces than that the
moon Is going to pieces."
Tun question of Presidential candi
dates taking the stump Is one of great
Import on tho ground that they are apt
to say Something that can be used
against them. This is quite true ns re
gards General Hancock who while he
did not exactly make a speech yet his
utterance that the tariff question was
simply a local Issue settled his Presiden
tial bash very positively. But with
lllalno that position would bo different
He is a campaigner from Campalgnvlllc

II; nnd ns ho will bo the recipient of
about all tbe abuse possible during the
campaign he would run but little chance
of making any great Blip nnd the ques
tion of his election would not be In any
manner Jeopardized. Tho scurrility
now being hurled nt Mr. Blaine If kept
up during the campaign will make his
election sure for It has about passed In
to a proverb that the man who Is most
abused and has the most political mud
thrown at him If he have any abilities
whatever will succeed. This Is the
loglo of politics ns one of the best
things about human nature nnd the mass
of great American voters Is that they
always sympathize with the man who is
traduced. Mr. Blaine in 1870 met his
accusers and vindicated himself fully
nnd freely of every net charged against
him then which aro simply being re
peated now apd his appearance in the
latter part of the campaign either In the
South or East would give to the ticket
a success unprecedented and make the
campaign ono that will llvo long In his-
EmvAitu Eveiikit Hale discussing the
political situation in the Independent
says: "Tbe situation as I understand It
is this: From 1S01 to JWl the National
Administration was generally In the
hands of a compact Southern oligarchy
which used the machinery of ministra-
tion for Its own purposes and greatly to
the Injury of the Nation. From ISfll to
this time It has been in tho hands of the
Northern States. In t tils period have
been made the greatest advances In the
National history and for the llrst time
there has been a certain effort to make
the Government represent the principles
on w bleu we all say it is founded. It
now seems possible for the solid South
ern oligarchy by a combination with
the voters of the worst wards of the olty
of New York to regain tho power they
lost in 1801. Many gentlemen whom I
nigniy respect asK me and others who
have voted with the Itepubllcan party to
assist mis combination. 1 ou ask me to.
I do not think I shall very much. It
must ue remembered that the eleotionof
a Democrotlo President means the elec
tion of a Demooratlo Congress. Though
he were an Immaculate saint as I believe
It Is proposed that he shall be he could
do little to restrain the hunger of such a
throng. For very fortunately the
President with us has but llttlo power
when he Is alone. The election of a
Itepubllcan President means the eleotlon
of a Itepubllcan Congress. Such a Con-
gress can not do much harm; It may pre-
vent a good deal 1 am told that the
election of a Democratic President Is to
be a Mep In Civil Service lteform. I do.
not see It. 1 bellevo Mr.Cnrllsleandlhe
Democratic- convention are expected to
promise this to the Independence of the
North. So I remember that the forester
In "A'Aop" promised his daughter to
the Hon If he would let him trim his
claws After the claws were trimmed
the forester knocked the lion In the head.
The objeotlon urged to Mr. Blaine In
the Journals edited by Englishmen Is
that his polloy will bo National or
American. With my views of the poli-
tics of the world this Is not a serious
objection."
