publlran ticket Roon with undiminished
enthusiasm and tho weakness of tho

Krxnr convention that meets In Fort
Worth passes n resolution complimen-
tary to 1'eter Smith and If ever a man
carried a town around In his pocket that
man Is Peter Smith.
A Colorado City stock man gives it
as his opinion that from four-fifths of tho
sheep men of West Texas will support
Blaine and Logan. If they stick to their
Taylor resolution they cannot support
any other ticket.
The Jlrozorla Independent speaking
of Congressman Ochiltree says: ''Some
of the papers think that It Is possible
that Tom Ochiltree will not he n candi-
date. Tom will be a candidate If all his
friends advise against It. He never for
a moment loses confidence In Tom
Ochiltree."
Coxsul Shaw of Manchester Kng-
land In a recent report makes tho state-
ment that the average weekly wages of
cotton operatives In the Manchester dis-
trict are $C DO. Statistics of tho cotton
Industry In Now England show that
Massachusetts operatives receive an
average of $10 a week and the prices
of necessaries of life are no greater In
Massachusetts than In Manchester.
There Is Just ft little uneasiness In the
Democratic mind ob to Mr. Benjamin
Butler's real Intention and the extent
of the damage he will do at the Chicago
convention. In a letter written n few
days ago ho said that many of the ne-
groes of the south would vote for him
and thai if he had the nomination of the
Democratic party tho white Democrats
of the South would also vote for him.
If the Democratic papers keep up
with their work of defending Senator
Bayard for his celebrated Dover speech
In 1801 they will paralyze his boom be-
yond all recovery. Tho following Is one
of the most marked sentences of tho
speech: "Let us fellow-men follow
peace as our bright north star whose
radiance may be mild hut never delu-
sive or uncertain while In the calama-
ties of war ond In that worst or wars a
civil war we shall only reach by sheer
exhaustion the peace we can now com-
mand In ten days by treaty."
Sr-Eixisra of Mr. Tllden's declination
and Mr. Blaine's nomination the Atlan-
ta Constitution says: "Should he be
elected we believe his administration
will be n liberal one. He is the ablest
and most experienced publlo man to be
found In the Republican party and If
the country Is to have anothor four
years of Republicanism we believe Mr.
Blaine will give more general satisfac-
tion than any other Republican. He
will at least fly the American flag over
the White House and the Stato House
and there will be" some consolation In
that.
Mn. Thaddel's B. AVakeman of New
York City Is out with a brand new po-
litical remedy and says: "Let there be
but one House of Congress such as we
have now but sitting permanently and
not controlled by commltteesorspeakcr.
Let that body elect the President and
keep him In office during good behavior
or until tho country through Its Repre-
sentatives requires a change. Let his
Cabinet officers be required to explain
their course to the Congress verbally or
In writing when called upon or when
they think proper. Then let us have
Civil Service Reform In fact."
The Democrats in dlfi'erent States find
difficulty in making their platforms con-
form to the demands of the people. Two
delegates In California resigned that
honor because they were dissatisfied
with the State platform and It Is a mat
ter worthy of record that as examples of
political honesty they stand without
rivals. Speaking of platforms If all the
Democratic State jobs of this character
should be taken to Chicago with an
attempt to work them all op Into one
grand platform the great American
patch work quilt would be a very tame
ft affair Indeed In comparison with the
i varied and positive contrasts which the
political job would display
a f 1
"Mr. IIeeciier tells the Baptist minis-
ters that he Intends to stand by the old
Republican flag but not by Mr Blaine.
Well It Is an impossible fact" says the
New York Tribune: "The Republican
party acting through Its fairly chosen
fairly acting delegates lias placed the
old Republican Hag in Mr. Blaine's
hands. The postoffice address of the
flag will be the hands of James 11.
Blaine until further notice. Hence it is
simply impossible for Mr. Bcecher to
stand by the Hag without standing by
the ling-bearer. So far as tills campaign
is comerned they are one and Inscpera-
Mo mill the man who holds differently
might ns well say that he stands by Ply-
mouth church but not by Mr. Rccchcr."
U.Mir.it the head of "A linn foreign
policy desired" tho Balllmoro Ameri-
can speaks of tho Republican national
ticket ns follows: "The pcoplo of this
Republic arc proud of It and believe In
It. They hate to see themselves In nn
npologctlo attitude or eating humhlo
pie. They love to see America repre-
sented at foreign courts by men who arc
out-and-out Americans-men with no
hankerings after aristocracy or royalty;
men who feel that they have fifty mill-
ions of freemen behind them. For tho
enemies of Blaine to attack him on the
ground that his foreign policy would bo
"risky" wilt not harm him In the eyes of
the people. There is very little danger
of war where men are simply firm and
positive In asserting the right. The
danger lies in the timidity w hlch sliders
aggression to tho point that It becomes
unendurable."
Gc.sr.iuL Bt'Tt.Kithas formally accepted
the nomination of the Greenback party
for President and in his Icttcrdellnes
his position as a real genuine dyed-ln-tho
wool Grecnbacker of the most pro-
nounced tjpe. Tho distinctive peculiar-
ity of your averngo Greenbaeker Is that
he is always talking about the great
wrongs of tho people and the burdens
they bear just ns if the country was
ruled by n despot nnd Mr. Butler proves
the faith that Is In him when he says:
"I am with you and if 1 hero were but
two of us we ought to stand together
against tho great wrong and call upon
all true men to stand with us cither In-
side or outside as tho case may be of
one or tho other of the political organi-
zations which may nlm to perfect other
measures for the good of the country.
Tho Interest of labor tho preservation
of the lands of the people for the benefit
of the people tho control of tho agencies
created by the Government to be used
for tho good of tho people to regulate
nnd control n system of Inter-state com-
merce which shall control and cheapen
the transportation of persons nnd freight.
To protect all In their Just rights and to
confine all to their true duties to the
end that there may bo In this country
equal rights equality of burdens equal-
Ity of privileges and equality of the pow-
ers of all persons tinder the law has
been the polltlcnl rule of my life."
The movement now being made to-
wards the building of n home road from
San Antonio to somo point on the coast
is one that Is of more than usual Im-
portance to tho city. San Antonio to-
day and In the past possesses nnd did
possess n vast number of natural ad-
vantages but because the tide of capital
and Immigration came without any soli-
citation or eflbrt upon tho part of tho
city or tho expenditure of money much
that could have been Improved was neg-
lected until not only has the Interest
so to speak of our natural advantages
been squandered but tho capital as
well. This fact is being realized alike
by all and while It is not at all compli-
mentary to the enterprise of tho city
that it has so long neglected Its grand
opportunities yet this present railroad
movement will In a measure atone for
that neglect. Tho road is needed alike
for tho present and tho future and that
It can be built and made prosperous
there Is no reason to doubt. livery citi-
zen should give It his support and en
couragement but the capitalists tho
moneyed men of San Antonio should do
more. These men who receive small
fortunes every year from rents who
have had riches thrust upon them
through the enterprise of their neigh-
bors and who have reaped oil the bene-
Hts or the booms of tho past should
make their subscriptions large; 20 men
men In the city should take $200000 of
the stock and thereby show by their
deeds the faith in the entcipriso they
expect others to have. This Is the way
anu tne only true way to make It a suo-
cess. It is an old saying hut It Is worth
repeating that It Is a good business man
who Is willing to invest a dollar to get
back a dollar and a dime.
