Caul Sciii'm lias generally been n bol-
ter nnd bis bolt against Blnlne nnil Logan
la tbe weakest of all.
Amonq tho many new Democratic
Presidential coinblnallons the latest Is
MoDonold and Slocum.
A Mexican Is reported to have written
the sentence regarding that Itcpubllo
that "Our final destiny Is to become
Yankees."
IlLi.Niuoui Justice for n fact was ex-
emplified at Stockton California a few
days ago when two policemen arrested
an old man for stealing an orange. One
of the "cops" ate the orange and the
old man got 23 days In Jail.
The Waco Day says: "Tho fate of
the lluford family should teach Ken-
tucMans a useful son. The destruc-
tion of this family of wealth local dis-
tinction and Influence Is the result of
educating people In the belief that the
pistol Is the proper arbiter In cases of
real or supposed personal wrong.lt
Southern politicians assert that lllalno
and Loganis one of the strongest tickets
that could have been nominated for the
South. Itandolph Tucker of Virginia
Congressman Skinner of North Caro-
lina Harbour of Virginia and others
say that if any men on any ticket can
carry the States of Virginia North
Carolina and perhaps Florida and Louisi-
ana it is Maine and Logan.
Auoxa the men who will he prominent
aspirants to succeed Mr. Tllden's place
in the Democratic heart are Cleveland
ltandall Bayard Flower Payne Jlorrl-
Bon McDonald Hoadly Hendricks llut-
ler Carlisle Thurinan Field Jlolman
and Trumbull. It Is anybody's prize
Just now v lib. possibly a point In favor
of Dayard but at all events the conven-
tion at Chicago will not bo a prayer
meeting and tbe balloting will bo ylg-
"I'ltcouxEXT Republicans In various
portlonsofthe fjtnto profess to be elated
at Tllden's declination and they regard
the election of Maine as n certainty.
There it plenty of life in the Democratic
party yet and plenty of cood I'residen
tlal timber" says the Brenham Banner.
which Is all quite true but from the
huge sighs heaved by the Democracy
over Mr. Tllden's letter It would look
as If he were the only leader In the par-
ty and with him out of the race all hope
was gone.
Ex-OovnraoR Dick Hl-buaud car-
ried off the honor of the only
man who was elected by acclamation
as delsgate to Chicago at the Fort Worth
Democratio convention last week which
would indicate that his popularity was
above par and that he would not make a
slow oandldate for Governor at the
Houston convention. Tho Stoto of Texas
owes "Dlok" a monument and an hon-
orary pension for the great work he did
In Its Interest at the Centennial and he
should bo paid off In fnt and royal
olliccs. '
The Texas sheepmen in convention
nt Taylor a few days ago resolved to
Bupport no man for olllce who was not
in favor of protection to the wool Indus-
try. The Democraoy at the Fort Worth
convention declared against the pro-
tection of any industry by tariff tax. It
will be seen that that party is already
being placed at a disadvantage by rea-
son of the varied Interests of tbe country
and while it may not amount to much
yet there will bo considerable defect Inn
from its ranks by the advocates of pro-
lr niK Demooracy can hold together
with any degree of solidity postpone all
their fomily quarrels build a platform
that says what It means and means
what It says and go into the comnnlcn
With n well defined party Issue thev
possibly may win the Presidency hut if
mey iouow tue methods or the past and
the "traditions" of the party they will
bo at tho end Just where they started
from. A platform with a free trade
plank on ono end and a protection plank
onthenthcr will not win nor will the
general arraignment of the ltepubllcan
party on Its record and corruption of its
leauen do u.-
TftE New York Tribune says: "Tbe
Democrats havo been unnecessarily
troubling themselves over Air. Tllden's
course in regard to the Presidency. Tho
old gentleman is a physical wreck but
he has sufficient mental force not to top
his barrels In a vain attempt to reach
tbe White House at a time when James
O. Blalno nnd John A. Logan are the
ltepubllcan candidates. It Is not likely
that lie has at any time expected to run
a forlorn race for the Democraoy this
year. Hut If ho cherished any purpose
to becoino a candidate in coe weak
nominations were made by the Itepubll-
cans he quickly changed his mind when
lllalno and Logan were named. The
talk of Tilden s candidacy has no doubt
been a cover for other schemes."
"TnK ltepubllcan platform bears In
spection and study" says the Cincinnati
Times-Star. "It will wear well. 'Ihe
more it Is Investigated the better It ap-
pears. Probably no political convention
ever before adopted a series of resolu-
tions so comprehensive and satisfactory.
The Democrats will be puzzled to con-
struct a platform which will compare
favorably with it. To sny nothing of
the tariff In order to put the party in
agreement with the public sentiment of
various sections convention No. 2 must
appropriate for Democratio use at least
lialfa dozen resolutions of convention
Xo. 1. It must declare against Euro-
pean contract labor; In favor of tho en-
forcement of the eight hour law; for the
creation of a National Labor Bureau; for
the exclusion of Chinese laborers; for
the suppression of polygomyjJtnd n civil
rights resolution would also seem to be
necessary. Tho Committee on resolu-
tions will havo a hord etrugglo to
"worm over" the ltepubllcan resolu-
tions. And yet after all this will bo
easy in comparison with tho terrible
tussle over the tariff."
Blaink has won his first race in the
campaign at any rate. At Xcw Orleans
last week among tho attractions for the
benefit of the Southern Art Union was a
mule race nt tho fair grounds which
brought together a very largo and fash-
ionable audience. Society young men
rendered unrecognizable in Jockey cos-
tumes of many nnd varied hues were
tho riders and each man secured his
mule by chance by drawing a number
out of a hat. There were 11 entries
among which were "Blnlne" by Jlulll

of the Times-Democrat "Blulne getting

Tni: question of how the tltlo of
"Plumed Knight" was given to Blalno
has been repeated recently sulllcicnt to
warrant the republishing of that part of
Colonel Itobert O. Ingersoll's speech nt
the Cincinnati convention In 1S7G In
which it occurred as follows!
"Our country crowned with tho vast
and marvelous achievements of the llrst
century asks for a man worthy of the
past and prophet lo of her future: asks
for a man who has the audacity of gen-
ius; asks lor a man who is the grandest

James G. Maine. For the ltepubllcan
