THOMAS H. JOHNSON
Jluslnemi At a naffer.
Monday March 17. 1884.
As other boo us the Austin Stntes-
innn snys : " Tlio Ltmrr's cclllorlnl com-
ment!! upon tlio killing of Thompson
though strong nro couched In lnngnnge
which exhibits n far better spirit than
the Express' screed."
GovEitxoit CIuck of Knnnns lias Is-
sued n proclamation convening tho Leg-
islature In speolal session on to-morrow
Tuesday on account of the month and
foot disease which has broken out
among the cattle In the southwestern
counties of the State.
Tiikiib seems to be a lull In tho Xow
Orleans commlsslonershlp business
and the papers that talked so wildly
about tho claims ofHardenbrook and
Elliott have let up on the subject. As
the Governor cannot make known his ap-
pointment for about a month yet ho
certainly ought to have amplo time to
make n good selection In the man to
represent Texas at the World's fair.
Tub Galveston papers aro now dealing
In "oold foots" about the deep water
question and what with the Govern-
ment harbor Improvement appropria-
tion Eads' proposition and tho Deep
Water committee things seem to bo In
a bad way. Hut It Is to be hoped the
general Government will come down
sudlclently generous to secure the much
needed 20 feet of water over the bat.
"The colored people" says tho Corsl-
cana Courier "are organizing campaign
clubs all over the State and evidently
mean to work together with an eye for
tho main ohante. In off years and on
State and county questions the colored
voters aro as much Democrats as Kcpub-
llcans but on the National ticket they
aro solid for the Ilepubllcans. A good
many men have been practicing on the
Independent racket during tho last four
years and are going to make a tall effort
this year to get office through tho votes
or tue colored men. An occasional ono
will succeed doubtless but most of them
will have disappointment."
Austin appears to be very much torn
up over the death of Its greatest ppaoe
disturber Den Thompson and Its looks
extremely ridiculous for the Capital to
print In detail what one told another
who said ho heard It from a man who
had talked to an eye-witness. Such
statements are simply stuff ore not
even newspaper enterprise and as for
as eye-witnesses are concerned there Is
not a man who was In the Vaudeville
theatre at the time beside tho partici-
pants who had the nerve to stay and see
the aflalr through. These eye-witnesses
generally were the first fellows who got
out at the windows and took the sashes
with them. It Is reasonable to suppose
that the man who was there at the time
and saw It all would be powerful anxious
to go before a coroner's Jury and tell all
he knew and as no suoh party did do
anything of the kind the statements of
eye-witnesses can be taken with- many
grains of allowance.
Undkii the head of "Our Next Con-
gressman" the Medina County News
says: "We notice that the name of
Hon. Hal L. Gosling Is being spoken of
as the probable Kepubllcan candidate
for Congress from this district. He has
never Intimated that he would make the
. race but the many oompllments which
have been paid him by the press
both In and out of this dis-
trict seem to point to him as a
very available candidate. Sir. Gosling
has been a oitlzen of this county for
many years and would make a people's
representative of which every man In
Medina county would he nrnml. ir i.

SmtKiNO of libel suits tho Galveston
l'rlnt says : "Tho smart and virtuous
Alecks who bring suit for libel ngalnst
nowspapcrs should learn n lesson from
tho Now York gentleman who was
fresh enough to suo n paper for $100000
becauso It had Injured his reputation.
Tho caso was tried beforo an intelligent
Jury who summed up tho ovldcnco pro
nnd con and after n remarknblo short
deliberation brought In a verdict for tho
plaintiff for damages to his character to
tho extent of 12 great big copper cents.
Now this 12 cent character artist knows
his true value and tho l'rlnt wouldn't
bo afraid to wager n horso ngalnst n
bean that It will be his last libel suit."
The Cowboy
An oxcurslonlst from Ohio who re-
cently visited Western Toxns writes
thus of the cowboy: "The popular Iden
concerning him outsldo of Toxas nnd In-
deed with many people newcomers In
tho State who do not understand or ap-
preciate him. Is that he Is a rough a
killer a dcller of tho law a hoodlum of
tho worst character. In so far as tho re-
llncd niceties of society nro concerned
he Is rough. In so far as tho punctilious
and rigid requirements of tho law go ho
is cnreless of them. These things
though nre becauso ho is not used to tlio
etiquette of tho oity tho manners cus-
toms nnd polish of the "uppor-tendom."
Ho Is not n dude nnd wouldn't bo If ho
could. He Is careless of tho rigid exac-
tions of tho law beoauso whoro he lives
as he lives these rigid executions aro
not necessary cither for tho good of so-
ciety or for the maintenance of tho law's
dignity. lie respects society nnd honors
tho law In Its spirit. As n friend ho Is
as true as steel oven to death; as nn cm-
ployo he Is faithful day nnd night to tho
sacrlllce of his life If necessary. Ho Is
hardy robust nnd strong for he lives In
the open nlr regardless of the winter's
cold or the summer's heat. Ho knows
not what fear Is and to toll ho Is so In-
ured he can scarcely appreciate the word
fatigue.
A Flood Sufferer.
Young Simmons who came to Arkan-

with old Nnt Ouble's daughter. When
Simmons asked for the girl tho old man

tor ns he arose to oppose the nomination
of a candidate for County Treasurer;
"No I have nothing to sny ngalnst the

thing ho has too much ability."
"How Is that?" asked tho Chairman.
"Well you see over nt Cross Dog
