Pocahontas this morning says; "An ex-
plosion occurred In tho coal mines here
last night at 11:30 o'clook and from 120
to 1M) miners wcro killed." Later No
further particulars havo yet been re-
ceived or the explosion in the coal mines
at Pocahontas. Great confusion prevails
there mid accurate information can not
he had before evening. A special train
with surgeons on board left here for the
scene of tho explosion at 10:1B o'clock
this morning.

fected yesterday was examined by Dr.

reported to-day. So far tho quarantine
regulations established by tho commis-

Milwaukee March 13. Prentiss Til-
ler the Paolllo Express company's agent
at St. Louis who decamped with nearly
100000 a few days ago was arrested at
10 o'clock this morning by a Milwaukee
detective and $00000 of tho money re-
covered. A young man looking like a
tramp with a small moustache brown
hair slight build unobtrusive features
and about 135 pounds weight bought a
trunk at the store of Carpeles & Schram
on Tuesday andaskedto have it shipped
to E II. l'achen Detroit Michigan.
Ho left a valise which he asked to havo
placed Inside tho trunk to save htm the
trouble of carrying it. When about to
put the valise in the trunk the clerk
dropped it and the clasps burst asunder
the bulging contents rolling outuponthe
floor. On gathering up the bundles he
found them to be wrapped In Paclllo Ex-
press company labels and closer exami-
nation disclosed that every package con-
tained a prize tho total amounting to
nearly $1)0000. Tho police" were notllled
and with a description of tho man traced
him to a cheap boarding house in the
Third ward but he was not at home.
They found his trunk however and
Belzcd it. As the boarding house people
suld the man was frequently out all
night tho police continued searching tho
city thinking that ho must be on a spree.
Tills morning he returned to the store
whero tho trunk was purchased to ask
about the valise and was arrested. He
has been at the Third ward boarding
house since March 8 but it Is not known
whether or not ho boarded anywhere
else before that. Besides the money
there was a large amount of valuable
jewelry In the valise. The money was
placed in the Merchants' Exchange bank.
PbTEnsuuito March 13. Intelligence
Just received confirms tho story of the
terrible explosion at the coal mines of
the Improvement company at Poca-
hontas this State. The horror occurred
at 1 o'clock this morning. Particulars
are very meagre and nothing has been
learned of how It occurred. Over 100
men are known to be killed. These
mines are owned by a joint stook oom-
pany mostly of northern capitalists.
Further intelligence from Pocahontas
represents the work of destruction at tho
coal mines as horrible and complete
There were 150 men In the mine at the
time of the explosion and not one is be-
lieved to have escaped. Those not killed
outright by the terrible force of the ex-
plosion most likely perished from the
after damn. The cause of the explosion
is not yet dellnltely explained as the
entries to the mine are full of bad air but
the nresumntion Is that some one In the
mine struck a Assure of gas. Several
parties ventured in the mine this morn-
ing but could not long endure tho foul
atmosphere. A number of bodies were
discovered horribly mangled some of
xnein wuu tne ucaus tornirom ine trunKS
and others with the limbs all gone pre-
senting an appalling speotacle. The
work of destruction was not .entirely
confined to the interior of the mines but
houses 200 or 300 feet away from the
mines were overturned and in several
Instances nearly demolished. The large
ventilator of the Southwest Improve-
ment company was blown into atoms
and the mines cannot be entered until
another one is constructed. The work is
now progressing rapidly. A large force
is engaged on tho other mines. The
people are busy constructing oofllns and
perfecting othsr arrangements for the in-
terment of the dead miners most of
whom were foreigners. The latest In-
telligence that Jin exploring party had
entered the mine for a short distance and
brought out six bodies in a frightfully
mangled condition. There is no hope
that any will be resoued alive.

some of her own citizens and many In tho State to possess tho rcqulslto skill In all of IU

crowned his ctTottsand holiaa won the enduring aratltudo of bundmla whom ho haa treated
from all part of tho Stale. A few of tbcm am given below as reference.
A fow remarks In regard to tblsdlsoasomay not bo outof place hero as It Is to common.
Nearly all havo tbo troublo at some Umo In the ncutc.form and call It a cold Sometimes they
aro aware thoy harJIy get over one cold until they hae another. Tho cold or more properly
speaking tho catarrh then becomo sub-acute. Ity neglect this runs Into a cbronlo form
Bometlmea It Is located In tho uosoisoractlmes the throat or both. Sooner or later It affects
tho cars causing frequent ringing or roaring in thecal or other noises. Sometimes violent

greater or less degree. Very often too It extends up through a llttlo duct from tho noso to

Nearly all are familiar with catarrh In tho form of bronchitis.
Catarrh In all Its forms and noarly all IU stages can bo oured. Ilutpooplo neglect It and so
do physicians. Tbey neither prcparo themselves with tho Instruments or knowledge sufficient
or necessary to treat this troublosomo disease m a rule and thus people themselves do not
apprehend tho danger they are In whon they consult a physician and ho tells thorn "01 1U
nothing but a cold and yet that so-called cold In a vast numbor of cases Is tho first start of
deafness blindness loss of smell loss of voice of Laryngitis llronchltts and Consumption
Any or several of theso.may follow and bo caused by a neglected cold. Delow are a few name
which I havo permtsston'to use who havo boon treated by mo with benefit for Catarrh la some

A few words now In regard to the car may not bo unlntorostlng'tosomo especially those
who aro sufferers from varied and numerous forms of diseaso. Very few people need urging
to consult an Aurlst when they havo a dischargo of matter from It especially If aocompanlod
by u foul emoll yet some will and that too etrangoaa It may sound In this day of enllght-
mcnt by advlco of physicians but surely It Is never done by one who understands disease of
this organ.
It Is a lamentable fact that some of tho older physlclana (without anyapoolal knowledge on
thla point) havo u prcjudlco against tho stoppage ol purulent discharges from tho ear but thl
Is based upon the erroneous teachings of old French writers Du Vernoy and Itard. D. D. Bt.
John ltoosa M. D. LL. D. Professor of Diseases of ISyo and Ear In the University of New
York City; Surgeon of Manhattan Eyoand Ear Hospital: Consulting Burgeon of Brooklyn Eye
and Ear Hospital etc and who Is consldorod tho very host authority on the sbbjeet says In his
last work; "There Is no pathological exporlcnco on record which can sustain tho assertion
that It Is dangerous to stop a discharge from tho ear." Lot anyone acquainted with anatomy
consider this fact that thoro Is perhaps no part of tho human body which has moro Important
anatomical relations. Tho cavity of tbo tympanaum is covered over by a thin bony plate
which la In direct communication with the cerebral menlngca; the Boor Is close to the great
Junior Ita Internal wall Is tho labyrinth wall covorod only by very thin membrane and open-
ing Into tho branches of tbo aooustlo norvo while on tho outaido we havo a thin mcmbrano
about as thick as paper Itlsoasy to soo that a continuous destruction of those parts by sup-
puration unless cured. In this part would soonoror later (which it always docs) lead to serious
troubles In tho brain and sometimes In tho lungs or heart. I And a large percentage of the
cnaes having a "running car" havo also a cough and when the oar lsourod the oough U also
cured Instead of being worse.
Then tbore Is another cla ea of cases that sometimes consult the doctor they complain of
ringing or roarlngorothcr noises In tho car. Ho tolls thorn thor have cold and a doa t
quinine porhaps Is given this may bo rolievod for a tlmo but sooner or later returns but tho
sufferer had his fears allayed by recovering partially from tho flrstftttack and so docs not foci
any anxiety this tlmo and tries tho old remedy again. It falls and so does everything else tbey
try and their friends don't aympathlzo as thero la no extern! ovldeneo of the suffering caused
by this condition but this at least causes them to hunt up an Aurlst who examines the ear
and he finds the ear perhaps bo far gone that It Islmposslbh to restore Its full boarlng powers
and ho must havo great skill Indeed to stop tho course of tho dlsoaaa and keep tho hearing
from being lost entirely so far do those cases run bo Torn tho po ople consult competent skill.
If pcoplo would go to tho Aurlst every tlmo anything was tho matter with tbolr ears and
not wait to consult physicians and othors they would suffer far less andprcscrvo their hearing
much bettor as neary all tho dlsooses of this organ aro curable op oclally In tho first stages.
Bpaco will only allow a fow names for reference who bavo beon cured of ear dUoaaes hero by

Tho diseases of tho eye are very numerous nearly 200 In number clearly defined and recog-
nized by tho oculist all requiring different treatment In ordor to cure them and restore good
vision. Yet nothing shows tho folly of going to tho general physician for treatment of tbla
organ than the fact that ho has only sufficiently studied this complicated organ sufficiently
to recognize from threo to a dozen it is in this ana tho careful application or properly teioctea
remedies to tho and tho different affections of tbo oyo that the superiority and the success) of
the Oculist consist.
Nearly all the diseases of tho oyo are curablo
and properly treated and attended to In tho earlier stage before It has had time to destroy or
Injure permanently the vision. liutthoso cases that show blemishes and defects ofvlalon and
bllndnons so frequently are cases in which thero has boon dolav In socking an Oculist and
valuablo tlmo was wasted by trying somo domestic remedies or what Is nearly as bad trying
the ordinary physician.
I do not mean by my remarks above to condemn or criticise the general practitioner for
treating Catarrh or diseases of tho Evo of Ear that occur in his practice. It Is his duty to give
relief to all who aro suffering In anv and everr war possible and no doubt all do tho best they
can. But tney will all honestly confess that thov have not tho means. In the shape of selected
remedies Instruments nor tho time to acquire the skill and practlco to do Justice to these
What I do want overybody to understand is
and tho physician will deal honestly with his patrons who gives them such advice.
I soo in this country many caaes of Strabismus ("crooked oyoa" thoy are generally termed)
which la a defect In appearance uncertain vision and weakens IU Nearly every one of these
cases can bo completely cured and somo of them without any operation. Children should
never start to school without having this remedied. ........ .
Erollds that turn out showing the Inside or those that turn In and Irritate the eye-ball can
all be perfectly cured. Artificial eyea can bo fitted and worn without any pain and to look
pcrf octly natural. I bavo a largo stock of thom always on hand.
