THE ALAMO.
A Monument Should bo Erected In Memory of Us
Heroes
niltor Light.
Although my feeble words may pro
duce no more ell'ect upon tho people of
Texas than would n zephcron tho Alps.
I wish to set before them the obligation
which thoy nro under to erect a suitable
mcmnrlnlto tho heroes or tho Alamo
whoso heroism Is beyond nil "Greek
nil Itoiunn fame." This memorial should
bo erected on the spot which wns con-
secrated by their blood a point none will
gainsay. Itshould bo raised from tliu
free will offerings o( tho people by
voluntary contributions rather limit by
the Legislature nnd every man nnd wo-
man In the Statu should take n prldo In
contributing to this patriotic under
taking.
I Invoke tho newspapers or tho Stnto
to press this matter upon the public at
tention nnd urge the formation of coun
ty societies to raise funds. F.vcry news-
paper In tho Stnto should urge nnd ad-
vocate this scheme "In season anil nut
of season." Such a course .would re
dound to tho credit of thu press nay.
would cover it wuu glory. Let us pay
our debt or gratitude to tlio heroes or the
Alamo and prove we nro not "degene-
rato sons or noble sires."
Texas contains ninny citizens or wealth
who should bo proud to consecrate n
mlto of their wealth to so patriotic! n use
nnd even tho poorest could give a dollar
to this purposo. Let each county en-
deavor to raise thu largest fund. I would
suggest Hint so soon ns $10000 shall bo
raised the foundation of the monument
shall bu laid ami tlio work bo pushed
forward ns minis now in lor i cannot
doubt but Hint they will flow in once It
bo brought before the People
I ngnln appeal to tlio newspapers to
take this mutter In hand nnd to keep It
before the puhllo by constant appeals.
