going lo lake advantage of Leap year and
offer herself to all the political parties of the
country in succession.
FEBRUARY 35 is the iliy set for voting on
the sewerage proposition anil public interest
in the matter is not ss great as It should lie.
The city needs scwersge and street im-
provements. Only a l?w years ago the mall for the
Home of Representatives used to be carried
from the city postoffice to the Capitol in a
tingle pouch now it makes 15 one horse
wagon loads.
Till business interests of Western Texas
hiviog survived the fence cutting troubles
and stood the debilitating effects of a special
session of the legislature no doubt will re-
vive and prosper with the coming of new
grass
Till Senate could see no constitutional ob-
struction in the way of passing a bill appro-
priating $20000 for the representation of the
State at New Orleans. If they could as
easily settle the fence cutting troubles the
sp:cial session will not have been in vain.
Tut Light has received the Lampasas
Eagle a new paper published atthat place by
Messrs. llowers & Vandethurst. Itis a seven
column all home print. Democratic but not
"intensely Democratic" to quote from the
salutatory. We recognized in Mr. Bowers
daring his connection with the Tanola Watch-
man a wide-awtke energetic newspaper man
and his Eagle can not fail to be of great bene-
fit to Lampasas and the Light wishes it un-
bounded success.
Till Galveston Print list started a little
prediction shop of its own and says: "If the
Democratic Presidential nomlnalion goes to
the West it will find lis way into a net spread
by a very estimable gentleman whose name
begins with a P. and who is popularly sup
posed to have some connection with an ex'
tensive business in oil. As mailers stand at
present he is Ihe most prominent and
promising candidate in Ihe West for the
a imination and if he does receive it there
are' in Texas several alleged Democratic
papers that must either bolt the ticket or eat
an unwholesome quantity of crow. It remains
to be seen which they will do"
Steakino of the recent reception given ti
President Arthur in that city Ihe New Voil
Tribune says: "The reception given to Ih
President of the United States last night by
his lellow members ol the Union League club
ws worthy of the club and of the President
Whoever seeks for a hidden political slgnifi
cance in it will be mistaken. General Arthur
has been a member of the club since Ihe days
Ol the war not always in accord with ih
majority of its members on purely partisan
questions but under all circumstances and at
all times commanding their Dcraoml nr..!
and esteem. The club bas for a long time
tendered such a matk of respect to every suc-
ceeding President. There was every reason
wny wnen tendered to a President who was
New Yorker long an active member and
habitual attendant with whose administration
his fellow members were satisfied and of
whose pcisonal conduct under the trying clr
cumstancet Ihey were proud it should be
marked by unusual heartliness and cordl
amy."
"Each ensuing day" jajs the Boston
Commercial Bulletin "makes more proml

Save crowded professions and ill-filled trades
A sale house It easily grasped at by loo jddII-
csnti though Ihe wages received be scarcely
more man -a cnance to learn Ihe business
Let a master workman Iry lo obtain an ap-
prentice at three times the sslny offered the
clerk and his applicants will be poor alike in
quantity and quality. A skilled workman in
any trade need never want for hire he Is eag
erly sought aller by loo employers he is inde-
pendent of the condition of the market I the
skill and cunning of his hand and eye are too
valuable to lose and mutt be paid whether
the products are slowly or rapidly consumed.
If business ceases the master hand If. eagerly
seized by tome rival house which knows and
values his skill. He who would crush down
the obstacle of success in our own days must
have as well as Ihe wit to see Ihe crevice Ihe
strength to deal the blow. This it an age of
the steam engine and It is Ihe engineer not
the conductor who is manager."
Tlir. Washington Republican says: "Every
body has heard of the man with a peculiar
gun that would hit an object obscurely seen
if it was a deer and miss should it prove to
be a calf. The Chicago Tribune has found
such a gun in the tarilT. It advances the po-
sition (hit a high tariff on wool reduces Ihe
price and conversely that a low duty will
raise the price. This is purely for Ohio de-
lectation. It happens in this way as explained
by the Tribune: The high duties on wool
Induce Virgin Tennessee Texas and heaps
of Stales to engage in sheep raising; this
causes a surplus of wool; the price goes down
and Ohio wool growers are compelled lo sell
wool cheap. Put down the tarilT Import
cheap wool drive Texas and the other Slates
out of the business and Ohio having a mon-
opoly can get her own price for wool. The
tar 'l gun will hit and kill Ihe Texas Tennes-
se and Virginia deer and miss the Ohio
cal . So the Ohio people arc called on to
elp slaughter the other Slates for the general
good and take their pay in high priced wool.
Cook county Illinois is to take its pay in low
priced cloth made out of the Ohio high priced
wool and the Eastern woolen men are to
make their money by paying the Ohio farmer
more for wool and telling the Chicago mer
chant cloth at a lower price. It is supposed
that this recommendation of the Chicago edi-
tor will cause a large demand for this gun in
Ohio and it is expected that Frank Hurd
Morrison Watterson and Carlisle will all be
engaged in peddling It in that State next fall.
Whether Henry II. Payne can be Induced to
shoulder one or not is not yet known. He is
pretty old hunter and is reputed very care
ful of Ohio calves in general so that an effort
to sell him a gun is worth making when am-
bitious men are investing in all sorts of death-
dealing Implements."
The road to success in business consists In
keeping one's business belore the public by
advertising liberally. The public look upon
Ihe fact that one advertises liberally as a proof
f his goods and they infer from it that it is
best for them to trade with a merchant who
shows himself to be active and zealous in ex
tending his business.' Where one is doing a
large business with a wide circle of customers
in fact with the public generally it stands
to reason that he can afford to be content with
smaller profits than his neighbor who enjoys a
small and scattering trade and Is obliged to
sell his goods at high prices In order to make
a bare support. The public also concludes
that if a merchant is thrifty and prosperous he
will show It by endeavoring lo widen and en
large his business by means of advertising
and the public is correct in its conclusion on
this point. Ilarnum the great showman owes
his success and wealth to the liberality with
which he advertised his business and the
same remark is true of all men who have been
notably successful in lm. Incs. At a cross-
road a merchant 'having no competition or
rivalry is under no necesnty of advertising but
in a city of 35000 inhabitants which is re-
ceiving accessions dally competition is brisk
and the rivalry is keen and the people are
guided by the advertisements in the news-
papers. The public consults the advertise
ments and is directed by them. Now there is
no small art in advertising in striking the
public at the right point for as Napoleon
said " the world Is governed through its
imagination" and the advertiser must so
frame his advertisement as to hit Ihe public
taste and attract attention. It teems to be
superfluous for us to point out Ihe advantages
of advertising in view of the fact that the ex
perience of the most successful business men
conclusively demonstrates them nor should
we have done so but for the circumstance that
many of our business men appear to be oblivl-
ousofthe fact that where the competition is
lively there is an absolute necessity lor adver
tising. Being an evening paper the Light is
not glanced at hurriedly as Is Ihe case with a
morning paper but 11 is read carefully and at
leisure after the close of business of the day
and on this account it presents peculiar advan-
tages as an advertising medium. The news-
paper never fails to give an advertiser a qiild
pro quo value received for his money and for
that reason there is no msnner of impropriety
In a newspaper calling attention to the advan-
tages which it possesses as a first-class adver-
tising medium.
Modern Improvements.
From tho Uhlcugo Herald.
Nobody has been killed In a Virginia duel
in 20 years. Each year Ihe Legislature Is
compelled lo pass an amnesty act relieving
offenders of their political disqualification!.
sometimes there Is opposition but It never yet
has been forcible enough to defeat the bill.
The men who "fight" as ills still called have
everytning tneir own way. They are not
killed I neiiher are they disfranchised. They
have satisfaction. They convince their ad-
versaries and the public generally of their
valor and the State looks benignantly upon
them and restores to them their citizenship.
This is certainly a great improvement over
the old system which Invariably calls for
blood.
The First Hand-Shaking President
From tho St. Louis Olobe-Deraocrat
General Jackson was the first President to
inaugurate the custom of shaking Ihe handt ol
all who came to hit public levees. Before that
time the populace had merely made a respect-
ful obeisance to Ihe President as their namet
were announced but Old Hickory who de-
spised all pomp and affectation and was noth-
ing If not Democratic took every hand in hit
firm and honest grip.
