AltUMBtKof bills have been reported in
the Legislature looking to (he establishment
and advancement of the free schools of the
Sute.
On member of the Lejlslatnre contem-
plates framing a bill providing about $15000
as an appropriation towards the New Orleans
exposition and suggests that the fundi be
taken from the Land office surplus.
Tin carriers' address of the old reliable
Jefterton Jimplecule has been received and
It Is one of the neatest and best of the illus-
trated addresses that hare come to hand and
the Jimplecute his the lhanks of the Light
for a copy.
It bigins to look like we would have the
Id fsmiliar political war whoop this year.
Already Duckner and Blaine are preparing to
exhibit their political rag baby to the country
and If the Republicans unfurl the gory shirt
there will be music in the air for a certainty.
The Uvalde Hesperian attempts to blast
the good name of the Light by saying that lj
has Congressional aspirations. The rewards
of politics are too meagre to offer any induce-
ments in that respect and the Hesperian is
mistaken in its conclusions. The Light is
not a chnmp by a very large majority.
Tilt Legion Monthly Magazine published
by F. Weber Benton St. Louis has been re-
ceived. The initial number is a beauty
typographically while the reading matter is
most interesting and entertaining and the
illustrations are excellent. It is devoted to a
treat extent to the interests of the order of
Legion of Honor and the price is only $1
per year or 20 cents a copy.
Thi Gatesville Advance philosopher most
truthfully ssys : "Of all the evil elements in
a community the scandal monger stand pre-
eminently ahead. The person who with
malice aforethought handles recklessly the
character or reputation of a neighbor has
hardly reached a plane for Christian forbear-
ance or consideration. We have far more re-
spect for the one who in the stillness of night
murders his victim than one who will scatter
acrimonious seeds of scandal to destroy the
character of a neighbor."
Tin Legislature has got to work! that Is
if the large number of bills already Introduced
is any indication. But it Is also auite clear
that the setilern'ent of the fence cutting
troubles by special legislation is a long ways
off. The members seem to hate ea:b
individually and collectively gone Into the
pedal session with a chip on his shoulder.
and is quite anxious for some one to knock it
off. 0 far the discussion of the question
his developed a wide range of disagreements
which is very likely to result in no prsctlcal
good. Large numbers of stock uen are in
Austin at the present time which fact will
have some effect in delaying the needed
legislatioi.
An Austin special to the News speaks of
the vacant United States Tudgship as follows!
"It is talked freely in Republican circles to-
night that Jack Evans will be nominated for
United States Judge for Ihe Galveston dis
tricl to-morrow Evans and his friends seem
to be perfectly convinced of this and also
have no fears of the ultimate confirmation of
the nomination by the Senate. Mr. Evans
claims that Senator Coke is his friend and
(111 vote for hts confirmation. He promises
toxeaie being a psrtlssn politician if he gets
onthe bench. Evans Is the toughest Repub-
1'cau.in Texas; yet he is a native of South
Carolina was a secessionist and fought four
years In the Confederate army. If the Pres..
dent nominates some one other than him
there wlllVbe some badly disappointed and
ctlrtst Rtpablicsns in Texas."
Occasionally some psper points with
pride to the lact that Texss can be made the
banner Democratic Stale of the Union. Mots
is the pity. If the political parties in Texas
were more evenly divided there would be
more progress and consequently higher
government. A Democrat of ordinsry ability
can no doubt govern Democrats but it would
tske a belter one to properly and success-
fully govern two parties whose balance was in
any way nearly equal. The Legislature o'
Texss to-dsy Is but a Democratic convention
and it Is simply divided up into little factions
whose only interest Is self and whose care for
the welfare of the State Is nothing. Texas
will be the banner Slate when Ihe parties be-
come relatively even and then we will have
an administration to be proud of but not
before.
The New Vork Times says: "It is idle to
assert as the advocate of strict Sunday legis-
lation usually do asiert that the laws forbid-
ding traveling on Sunday or the opening of
any public exhibition on that day are meant
solely to secure to public immunity from Sun-
dsy labor. Everyone knows that such laws
are passed in accordance with the theory that
the Fourth Commandment has made the
Sundjy iscr.-d and that work or pleasure on
that day are alike sinful. This is the view ol
only a small part of the Protestant world and
the State his no more right to enforce It than
It has to enforce Ihe observance ol Good
Friday or the Jewish Sabbath. It is time
tlut Sunday' legislation was kept within it'
proper province that of securing to the peo-
ple the benefit of a much needed heliday. On
no other possible ground can Sunday legisla
tion be sustained in a country where the Leg-
Mature can know no distinction between
Catholic and Protestant between Jew and
Gentile."
"Tin most thoroughly eloquent and effec
tive speeches ever made in the Texas Legis-
lature" says the Fort Worth Gazette " were
pronounced by two negroes and both were of
the same general Import a slave's devotion
to 'old msrster and mistlsi.' The following
is an extract from one of the speeches;
'There can be no great race enmity between
ns. This cannot come while my old mapter
and mlstiss live. No nor while their children
and mine survive. They were kind and gen-
erous to me. I knew no want of to-day or
care for the morrow when I was their property.
Look at these wrinkled rou h hands. They
tell the tale. They tell how I toiled for them.
And the story is not ended. They are old
and helpless now and live as I once did In a
little cabin and I still toil for them. I send
them half of every dollar I drew Irom the State
Treasury and when their daughter a beauti
ful aad good girl nhorn I used to carry when
she was a child in these strong arms was mar-
ried not long ago I sent her a check for
$1000. Have I not Iherigbt to ask you gen-
tlemed of the majority to deal generously
with my race 1" "
Under the head of "Bohemians Abroad"
the Houston Age speaks as follows of the
Missouri Pacific railway system: "We re
member along in the fifties the people were
very proud of the Missouri Pacific that had
hen built as far as Kirkwood about 13 miles
from the court house. They are prouder now
of the Missouri Pacific. Hut it reaches fur
ther than Kirkwood. It has ceased to be a
mere line and has passed into a system and
embraces the
