Tat resolutions pasted by the San Antonio
bar on the death of Judge Boone were very
appropriate is the opinion of the Fait Worth
Democrat
CccmssWAV SrciKGiK has accepted the
pesilion atiifaed him by Speaker Carlisle
and hints that his committee willorethaul the
Department of Justice and develop some
"waited tepa!chsrs."
Till sudden death in New York Saturday
raoraii j of Dr. Edward Latkrr will be re-
gretted by a Tery large number of people in
Texas and especially in this city where he
had many acquaintances.
A raoGHSSIvr. income tax would remedy
much of the existing troubles regarding the
tariff question and come nearer laying the
burden of Government upon those who ate
able to pay it than any other system.
Till Ohio wool growers are to meet in con-
vention at Columbus on the 15th of this
month for the purpose of taking action to
secure the restoration of the old wool tariff
although the outlook is not the most
promising.
Tnx mercury has recorded oaly about 15
degrees above sero in this city the last two or
three days which was celd enough for all
purposes and is not much in comparison with
the weather in the Northwest where the
Mercury has stood 24 degrees bclaw zero.
Tni Texas Live Stock association and the
Legislature meet at Austin to-morrow and it
is safe to say there will be considerable music
it the air regarding the proposed herd law.
Sat in a straight game of draw the Legislators
aay be able to get away with the baggage of
the stock fellows.
The Legislature has had a fair sprinkling
f advice on the fence cutting troubles good
bad and indifferent and he will be a very
raild patriot who does not this week intro-
duce a bill on the subject. The chances are
that the people will not be so anxious to be
protected from the fence cutters as they are
fram the Legislature.
Tnx great need of San Antonio caw is an
pera house one in keeping with the growth
and importance of the cily and one that will
aot have all the openness of a barn during a
cold spell of weather like that we hare had
the past few days. Teople will attend plscea
of amusement il they have any assarance of
being comfortable.
The DublinEcterprise says that last week
the pasture of W. J. Davis in the edge of
lotaanche county was cut and a picture of a
coffin with the following notice was found
conspicuously posted ! "This to the wire
fence men We want free grass and Twater
and free grass and waller we are goiog to
have at the risk of oar lives aad property.
Thers 15 sens this."
Judci McCxaxy will accept the position as
Chief Attorney of the Atchison Topekaand
Santa Fe railroad. The country will be In a
bad fit if the Federal Judges continue to
resign and accept positions oa the railroads.
The pay of a United States Tudire is onlv
$6000 per annum and' it is said Judge Dillon
now makes $50000 a year since he left the
bench: If this great American Government
wants goad counsel it should Increase the
salaries.
Ir Cruxmr begins at home New York cer
talnly has given most positive evidence of her
generosity to those dependant upon her. The
statistics go to show that during 188J New
York contributed to its home charities pan
pers widows and orphans the sum of $5800
000 or $4 75 per head for every man woman
and child in that city. To this sum could be
added lu ceatribatiees to the poor abroad
which would swell the whole amouut of lis
charities to about $6 per head.
Tltx Sunny Clime office at Terrell was
burned out early in September but the en-
terprising publishers secured another office
and are now Issuing the paper at Dallas. The
I.IOUT is pleased to receive the Sunny Clime
again for it is out of the order of every day
newspspers and is filled with sentiment and
fact which make Its readers forget the ordin-
ary vexations of living. It is dow as attrac-
tive as a woman's smile and has come out of
its trial by fire as pure and bright as burnished
gold.
The Bourbon papers in different parts cf
the Stale seem to take great pride ia the fact
that Tom Ochiltree's greatest promintnee in
the House committees is on the tsil end of the
Committee on Agriculture. It is true that
being a new member and also an Independent
Republican that he would have but little
hopes at the hands of Mr. Carlisle but he
has the ability and the desire to make him-
self useful and the Light predicts that Mr.
Ochiltree will not be the least Influential of
all the members from Texas before the sessioo
is over.
"Dick" Chilson the Anaheim Gaiette
says has written from Casa Grande Arizona
In that Territory as follows: "I have struck
four feet of gold ore that will go $1000 to the
ton. I took out 5joo worth of sold dust with
my pocket knife. I have got two twenty-fire-pound
boxes full of gold dust worth about
$3000. I have got nuggets of gold pure gold
as large as birds' eggs. I sunk nine feet oa
the le-Jge aad took out ten tons before I no-
ticed the gold and therefore blasted away
several thousand dollars. I have $50000 in
lijht. The country is crazy over it. There
are clusters of gold as big as dollars stick-
up; all through the ledge. There has been a
sale made of one mine near me for $300000 ;
another sold four miles from rae far $20000.
I declined $16000 for mine."
Tux Intei-Ocean does not tske the slightest
stock in the talk about the strength of free
trade in the West. It says: "Not a State or
Congressional district between Pittsburg and
the Rocky mountains is ctpable of assembling
a Republican convention that would not pass
raight protectionist resolutions. Not a
Republican convention in the West State or
Congressional In so years has passed any
other kind of resolutions on the tariffduestion.
There is but one Stile in the West Indiana
which the Demo:ral!c party can ever carry on
any platform and it can only carry that on a
protectionist platform. The whole country
Republican press of the West with a mere
half a dozen exceptions out of nearly 1000
journals a protectionist. The Northwestern
constituencies are protectionist in principle
from habit and by contictions."
The New York Tribune discusses the red
sunset business as follows: "We have ceased
to believe that red sunsets prognosticate war
or pestilence or the death of great men cr
the use or downfall of dynasties but we know
no mere than our ancestors did the real cause
of these occurrences. Our scientists suggest
all manner of explanatioas but none of them
are more than conjectures and some of them
lackthemerit even of plausibility and so we
flounder amid theories of meteoric dust cos-
mic dust volcanic dust cometary bodies
vapor and so forth but we do no' know the
origin of the red sunsets we a'reire aad per-
haps the greatest advance in this direction of
which we can boast lies In the fact that wc are
no longer afraid of unusual phenomena and
have learned that strange things may happen
without portending either good or evil to the
human race."
O.N the subject ol investing surplus
money the Texas Flanter and Farmer says:
'We see nothing In the future for our surplus
money to be put to except cotton factories.
The farmers are suspicious of even these
paying Institutions aad for the reason they
are managed by town folks who figure too
fast for them. We wish this was otherwise
for the reason it would redound to the greater
wealth and prosperity of the country at large.
Were it possible to devote the gross proceeds
of one cotton crop to starting cotton mills
the result would be at once more than doub-
ling our annual revenue. There is too much
suipicion in Texas. Men are prone to mis-
trust each other to an extent that is positively
unjust. People are just as upright and hon-
orable here as they are anywhere. They are
more so than in most of the Eastern States
where all cofindence has.been pretty much de-
troyed by stock-gambling watering freezing
out and other names for swindling. There
is more power running to waste in Texas rivers
than we control in all the muscle of our pop-
ulation white and black mules horses oxen
and engines. Shall we utilize It? This is
the question of questions. We certainly will.
Perhaps not by this generation. The next
will. We might and could II we so willed.
It's simply a matter ol confidence and money.
The first step is to gain confidence. Money
will follow. Twenty years ago you could no
mere get a man to Invest in a Georgia mill
than you can find one in Texas to-day. There
is no trouble now."
