Iupirsonal journalism enables the news-
papers to set before the public the cresm
skimmed from tlie minds of half a doien men
and to bave fresh and spaiklinj articles crisp
paragraphs that burn like a hot Iron and con-
densed ideas In compressed Ungusee which
stick burr like in the minds of readers. Many
of the best writers turn out poor editors when
put to the test; they do not consult the taste of
the public as to the length of their articles but
follow their own whims and tastes from over-
weening vanity or contempt for the juJgmcnt
of the public.
Tin news from Washington is to the effect
that Democrat are torn to pieces about the
appointment of the standing committees and
that Carlisle is worried into sickness. John
Hancock the ablest man from Texas was not
appointed chairman of any committee. Cato
had no statue erected to him accordiog to
custom after he had held the olhce of pretor
but he said it made no difference since the
absence of it would lead people to ask why It
was omitted and it will be the same with John
Hancock's not having a chairmanship. It
will cause comment.
NiwsrArsRS in order to achieve success
must study the taste of the public and provide
just such a paper as the people desire Just as
a merchant must buy goods suited to the mar-
ket. We are not here t peaking of principles
but merely of the conduct of the paper the
preference of crisp paragraphs to heavy leaders
and variety of subjects to the sing-song of
political platitudes. There are men Incapable
of writing a crisp paragraph j everything from
their pens runs into treaties. "Goldsmith"
said Or. Johnson "would make minnows talk
like whales" meaning he could not suit his
style to the subject and that is the failing of
one half of the editors.
Tin attack made by the Houston Tost upon
Major Uartow personally has elicited a cood
deal of comment and criticism most of it de-
cidedly adverse to the course of the Tost and
the Light concurs in this condemnation of the
Fost In violating the rules and customs of im-
personal journalism. It is not Tom Dick or
Harry who speaks through the editorial col-
umns but It Is the newspaper with the reputa-
tion and influence which it may have won.
This is Impersonal journalism in the true sense
and meaning of that phraze. The individual-
ity and personality of the particular writer is
merged and lost in the character of the news-
psper; it is Ihe newspaper which speaks not
the particular writer of a particular article
appearing in its editorial columns. Every
article is intrinsically well or Ill-written spicy
or stupid logical or sophistical courteous or
discourteous independently of the authorship
that is to say the article speaks for Itself.
The Light is conducted upon the plan of im-
personal journalism the paper speaks and
Dot any particular writer; and the paper does
not reflect the humors whims likes and dis-
likes of anya particular writer but requires
writers for its editorial columns to conform to
and maintain the viewsand policy of the paper
regardless of the private opinions of the writer
on the subject discussed. The Houston Post
Is a good gatherer of news a good newspaper
but we cannot give it praise for editorial
ability since it does not deserve such praise
nor It it conspicuous for editorial urbanity and
courtesy a fact shown by its attacking Major
Bartow personally for teaching a negro school
gratuitously and occasionally in Georgia ij
years ago. Major Harlow himself has not
been free from blame In this personal contro
versy with the Tost inasmuch as he himself
was the aggressor la some respects and in
our unbiased judgment displayed something
of an Intolerant and persecuting spirit towards
the Fost. Impersonal journalism in a great
measure closes the door against these aaj
monlous personal controversies between edi-
tors suffering from torpid livers and Indiges
tion since the newspaper talks and not the
mere Individual penning an article.
LIGHT ON THE WING

Hotels and lluslness Hull.
The business end man of the Light accepted
the special courtesies of Mr. II. W. McCul-
lough the live popular Tassenger Agent of
the Missouri Pacific last Friday and took a
flying trip to the charming little cily of Waco.
The trip on the way was pleasant and the train
arrived on time and after fixing on a dude
collar and bracing up wilh a Wheat lemonade
he made his way for the Waco Female college
building where there was to be given a musi-
cal anddramatic entertainment at night by the
young ladies of this splendid school. The
reputation of the Light had preceded lilm and
its representative was greeted wilh a hearty
shaking of hands by both teachers and pupils
and he at once felt like an important peison.
He accepted a "d. h." from Mrs. Kounsavall
(he lady principal to see the show. The time
was most pleasantly spent In witnessing an ex-
cellent cnteitainment. The musical part was
especially fine and made a critical
audience forget that the singcis and
peiformers were amateurs. The first
piece rendered was an overture to Tancredl
by the orchestra which consisted ol three
pianos an organ flute and violin wilh the
following performers : First piano Miss
Ncelie Smither Miss Maggie Johnson Nan-
nie Crockett; second piano Miss Jessie
Walker Nettie Hotan Hottense Hen; third
piano Lotta Gurley Jennie Walker Fannie
Johnson; organ Miss Mattie Mackey; flute
Professor Leopold; violin Professor Keisincr.
The recitation of "The Little Girl In the
Hotel" by Kachael Rosenthal a little to
year old girl was a natural piece of acllng
and would have been creditable to many
traveling professionals.
The comic iti'ct "nmlly and lohn" by
Miss Fannie Johnson and J. II. Yates was
a fine piece of acting and singing and was
continuously applauded by the audience until
they were compelled to ting the entire piece
over again.
The Greeting of Spring chorus (Dlue
Danube Waltz) was rendered almost fault
less and was In Itself worth the price of ad-
mission charged.
The followiog were the singers: High
soprano and soloist Miss Fannie John-
son; second sopranos Misses Lee Cox
and Maggie Johnson; altos Missel
1-oula Womack Annie Deal Dean Mattie
Mackey.
The Mermaid song was also nicely rendered
by Misses Fannie Johnson high soprano and
soloist; Annie Eiutn and Sophy Sanger sec-
ond sopranos; Mattie Mackey Loula Womack
and Annie Ileal Dean altos.
"Nearer My God to Thee" by the school
choir accompanied by Miss Adda Shappard
on the organ with three pianos flute and vio-
lin s very affecting and touching and doubt-
less made many in the audience feel how
wicked and sinful they were.
The lower Girl (vocal solo) by Miss Fan
nie Johnson completely captured the audi-
ence. She was presented with a handsome
basket of flowers and Major Downs of the
Examiner threw all his loose change on the
stage for a little button-hoi bouquet thrown at
him.
The Calisthenics were executed wilh cor
rectness and the different movements and
marching looked like old soldiers.
In the Tournament of Idylcourt (Art vs.
Nature) an allegory Miss Hortense Herts as
Goddess of Art Jennie Walker as Goddess of
Nature Hattie King as Justicla and Nettie
Kotan as Poesy were especially good In their
respective characters and displayed consider
able dramatic talent.
This school Is now in a flourishing condi
tion and has 37 boarding and 175 day schol-
with the following competent corps of
teachers:
Vocal and instrumental music Mrs. U. O.
Kounsavall Miss Adela Shappard.
Music and literary Mrs. Parker.
Art Miss Sallle Howry.
Literary Miss Ola Wright.
Primary department Miss Sue Smithers.
Senior class mathematics and languages-
Prof. K. O. Kounsavall.
The Light man called at Ihe wigwams of
the Bohemians and received the usual con-
gratulations and smiles. Wheat is still cling-
ing to his Post not a lamp post and I.uni-
ford is shoving his pencil for the bright little
Dsy. To these gentlemen also to Mr.
McCulium of the Day and Captain Elgin and
Msjor Downs of the Examiner our thanks
aie tendered for courtesies shown.
The hotels of Waco cannot be bragged of
due most likely to want of live competition.
The McLennan house does not present as nice
dean rooms and beds and good bill of fare as
when run by Mrs. Hcalherly. '
The business men complain ol dull times
and quite a number of banners can be teen
hanging out Inscribed "Assignee's Sale"
"Selling Out at Cost" etc.

Your suggestion a while back that the city
charter be so amended as to give the electicn
of City Attorney to the people wat an excel-
lent one. That officer should be directly re-
sponsible to the people and independent ol
the Mayor and Council for as the "ox
knoweth hit owner't crib and the ass knoweth
his master" even so do office holders know
the hand that appoints them and "on which
tide their bread is buttered." Nor should
the election for all officers come off on one
and the same day but on separate days so as
to nip the formation ol rings and pools In the
very bud. The truth Is it it almost impos-
sible to prevent rings and pools among candi-
dates from being secretly formed and the pec-
pie should wage "war to the knife and the
knife to the hilt" against rings 'among candi
dates of officers. "Every tub should stand
on its own bottom" every officer be elected
upon his own merits and be free
to perform his duties according to
law like an Independent man. Town
Talk heard rumors that nearly a dozen
legal gentlemen are preparing to enter the
arena for the office held by judge Noonan
but probably double that number may be
aspiring to it. A start-as-you-please race
each one on his own merits without any
political nominations to jiptn a "lafiy" fellow
would result In electing some one who would
be independent of political considerations;
but such a race will not at all suit the msn
who stands behind the scenes and works. Ihe
puppets In front. Politics bat sunk Into a
trade a matter of dicker and tucker.
Town Talk went to see Mrs. Blab with
whom he formerly boarded well knowing she
would have u carpet sack full of news gossip
tiltle tattle and scandal. A great woman is'
Mrs. Dlab in her way. She Is 0 phenomenon
Scandal gravitates to her as naturally as
water runs down hill the absorbs gossip as
naturally as a sponge lakes up water. Nor
docs she put what she hears through a sifter
or the rinsing tub. Mrs. Illab can tell you
every woman in the city ahose reputation Is
smirched. How this one was seen to slip
Into an assignation house In disguise; how
that one It "mashed" on a "dude" In a cer-
tain store; how. such a girl goes up to a cer-
tain office every day; how that married man
went home drunk and kicked up a muss; how
Noodle was caught by the police In an ugly
fix out In the street minus his clothes; how
Dr. Quack dosed a man to death; how Lawyer
Slippery collected money and spent It etc.
Mrs. Illab Is a great woman. She is a walk-
ing intelligence office a private detective of
(he faults of her neighbors and spy on their
actions. Town Talk.
