TOWN TALK
TAKES ANOTHER RAMBLE AROUND
THE CITY.
Tli. ll.d Weather MayTax Ills Philosophy
but Ioe Nat Prevent lilt Might
Seeing In the City.
Those la it fe link misly Jr'uiling rainy
days iCTCrely tateil my philosophy and a
little more of It wnutd lure blown my stock
of philosophy lo the four winds of hearrn
and ibrccd into view the Innate cunedness of
my nature perhsps earned me to fire a volley
of "cuss words." The slush mud and water
were simply fearful; the streets were changid
Into branches and creeks and the plazas Into
inlsnd seal. At nestly every crossing a re-
spectable lake was formed. Vnat nas the
drain onCommerce street is a humbug for
as soon as the plank rots with which It it
covered which It wilt do in two years the
humbug will be apparent to the obtusest mind.
Earthen pipes should have been pi)t down
and covered over. lint let me fold up and
put away this disagreeable subject ol botching
the streets. To complain is singing psalms to
a dead horse.
The stores and shors locateJ on Alamo
plait have been pretty well Insulated since
the rainy weather commenced by the impassa-
ble slate of the plata and their owners have
lost considerable trade in consequence thereof.
bheets Corrcvan & Castles have a large
and fine assortment of goods in their
line and are selling them at reasonable prices
a circumstance which ought to attract a
large trade in good weither and wet weather
also II ihey will put a fory fiat on the inland
sea in front ol Idem to enable cuttomers to
cross it. Jnske's is always crowded mep
womtn and children have a fancy for his
store an I I will tell you why; his prices are
onable and his clerks are polite and
prompt In filling the orders of customers.
They don't talk lo genteel women on the sup-
position that they are women ol the town.
W'olfT & Marx In the new and spacious
store on the corner of Commerce and Alamo
not only have a splendid stand but a large
and magnificent stock of goods which are
very tastefully arranged. I visited it In com-
pany with two New Orleans ladies and was
well pleased. The ladies of San Antonio
have found out that he has elegant goods at
reasonable figures.
Turning up Commerce in a westerly direc-
tion Town Talk called a halt at the store of
V. Lorra who keeps a fine lot of goods for
gentlemen's wear and competent men for
making them up nnd is besides reasonable in
his prices. Town Talk engaged him lo make
his wedding suit.
lleinpanold huotir guns etc. never fail
to take the fancy of Town Talk; so he was
just bound to have a peep at the stores
oil' rank Olmsmlth & Co. of Charles Hum-
mell & Son and what he saw fairly
made his mouth water. Sportsmen can
find at these stores guns and all else they may
need for an outfit. E. Abrahams has some
capital wines and his grape brandy Is enough
to almost make a fellow form-ear water tt
leaves a good taste In your mouth.
Hearing a piano Town Talk stepped into
Goggan & llrothers No. 20 Commerce street
and found them well supplied with organs
pianos musical Instruments stiings and sheet
music and very polite and courteous. They
icerit liberal patronage.
J. II. Marquart has knocked down the
prices of boots and shoe so that nobody need
wear old boots and shoes any longer unless
they happen to be In the distressful predica-
ment of Town Talk In a state of chronic Im-
pecunioslty. Captain Ilosack was crying off some prop-
erty in front of his auction room and Town
Talk paused to eojoy his glib talk and his
pleasant face and while thus employed a
friend showed him a copy of the Jefferson
Jimplecute with the following notice of the
Captain: Remembrance of old and absent
friends Is an admirable trait; few remember
those who are present in the way of showing
real friendship to them and this little incident
Is creditable to Captain Ilosack. It proves he
has a kindly heart and Town Talk takes off
his hat to him. Kead the following para-
graph and patronise Ilosack:
"We were made glad yesterday by leceiving
by express from San Antonio with the com
pliments of Captain J. A. II. Ilosack a large
box filled with the choicest selection of
vecetables from the San Antonio market.
Tomatoes cabbage green corn turnips
lettuce splnage snap beans onions new
potatoes celery carrots and In fact a com-
plete list all as fresh and nice as could be.
Texas Is the greatest country in the world
and no portion of It has more favors showered
on It than the old Alamo City. We astute
our valued old friend that his kindness will
long be remembered and his present highly
enjoyed.'"
Town Talk has not completed his tour of
sauntering nor ts he foot lore or leg weary
he has made the advertisements In the Light
his guide so far and will do so in his next
ramble. Town Talk.

Hall colored was hanged at Rolling Folk at
3 o'clock to-day for the murder of an old
nrg-o man in November. He made Ihe usual
speech. He was ready to die; he was going
straight to Jesus etc. Several hundred wete
present principally negroes. When the drop
fell ihe culprit was not lifted free ofTlhe plat-
form and death resulted from strangulation
after hanging iS minutes. Silas Cane col-
ored will be hanged in the same place on next
Friday for committing an outrage on a little
colored girl.
It would be a blessing if some of the
callow ft.slglings in oratory who are ambitious
to air themselves on matters that do not con-
cern them in the least would try some other
place than a public meeting of business men
in which to be taught elocution or parliamen-
tary rules. Last night's meeting was bored
and distressed by some of these. As "mute
ingloiious Miltons" minding their own affairs
their cackle would be best received.
The orator who draws the biggest crowd
Is always selected to advocate public meas-
ures of importance because he talks to Ihe
largest audience. The same can be said of
shrewd business men. They advertise In the
journal having the largest circulation In order
to reach the greatest number. This Is one of
the many reasons why the Llonr is made an
advertising medium by practical business
men.
Should It turn out to be true that certain
parlies are going before the grand jury to tell
what they know of gambling in private club
rooms there will be "such a gettln' down
stairs" among the young bloods as to make
them look like a convention of fence cutters
under arrest.
