open house, Wednesday evening,
December 31, at 3012 Francis Ave-
nue, honoring their parents, Rev.
and Mrs. W. Thomas, on their for-
ty-ninth wedding anniversary. In
the dining room a bridal motif was
carried out in detail decorations of
white. A miniature platform top-
ped with the bride, groom and
attendants graced the table and
was banked with white tapers.
Mrs. Pearl Whitley, grand nurse
the couple presided at the coffee
service and Miss Emma Lee Mat-
thews poured the punch. Mrs. Whit-
ley was gowned in pink taffeta with
gold accessories and Miss Mat-
thews wore gray satin with red
accessories.
In the entrance hall which was
adorned with seasonal flowers, Mrs.
Turner Kemper, niece of the cou-
ple, beautifully dressed in black
chiffon with silver accessories, reg-

CLUB
The Houston Negro Chauffeur’s
Club held its first meeting for the
New Year in the reception room of
the YWCA, Monday night, January
5, at 8:30 p. m. with the president,
John Lewis, presiding. A continuous
increase is being shown in the mem-
bership; five applications were re-
ceived during the meeting. Names
of new members are as follow:

The home of Mr. and Mrs. W. A.
Warmsley was the setting for a
beautiful and informal wedding
when their charming daughter, Oli-
via Lillian, became the bride of
Mr. Walter Kerrigan Black of Chi-
cago, Illinois, the third day ofJan-
uary at 4 o’clock p. m., with the
Rev. Buford F. Brown officiating.
The bride, dressed in a powder
blue ensemble with blue and gold
accessories, was given in marri-
age by her father, W. A. Warmsley,
and was attended by her sister, Mrs.
George R. Shivery, Jr., of New
York City. George R. Shivery Jr.
was best man.
The bride is a graduate of Spell-
man College, Atlanta, Georgia and
has done graduate study at the Uni-
versity of Illinois.
The groom is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Walter Black of Chicago.
He received the A. B. degree from
th University of Illinois and has
completed two years of Law at
the same institution. He is a mem-
ber of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
Te couple left immediately for

Mr. Black expects to he inducted
into the army and the bride will

Corporal Clyde A. Branch of
Camp Wolters was the honored
guest at a lovely dinner given by
his wife, Mrs. Clyde A. Branch,
4702 Orange Street, in a wonderful
setting furnished by beautiful flow-
ers and a United States flag in the
center of the table.
Th guests enjoyed an appetizing
menu consisting of turkey, cran-
berry sauce, waldorf salad, green
peas, rolls, lemon pie and iced tea.

Corporal Jesse C. Broussard, of
Camp Polk, La., is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Paul Broussard. He has
been highly entertained by his
friends and relatives wtih numerous
parties, while home for the holi-
days.
The well-liked Jesse is a staunch
member of the New Testament Bap-
tist Church, and a former student
of Phillis Wheatley High. He was
born in Beaumont. His mother %-
tributes his promotions in the army
to him being a very obedient young-
ster.
THE BEATA ART CLUB
The club re-opened at the home
of Mrs. Ada Scourten, 2617 East
Alabama street, after being closed
for the holidays, new business was
discussed and the electing of officers
took place.

is a graduate of Jack Yates, a
former football star. Corporal Wil-
son is very popular in the social
set. He is stationed at Fort Sill,
Oklahoma. He is an expert gunner
in his section.

home of the bride’s mother; a de-
licious goose dinner, Christmas day

The 1906 Art and Literary Club
held it's December meeting at the
home of Mrs. A. E. Bowie, 3225
Berry street on Tuesday the 13th,
at five-thirty o’clock. The meeting
was largely attended.
The committees report on the
Bazaar of Nations was a big sue-
cess. The tasty supper served by
the charming hostess was enjoyed
by all. Mrs. Obie Browning of 2414

the club, Tuesday, January 13th,
at five-thirty o’clock.

THE LIONS CLUB
The club held its regular meeting
at 1009 Heiner. Meeting was held in
the regular manner and many dis-
cussions were made. The club is
looking forward to giving a dance
in the month of February. All
clubs will be invited.

ity Dance which will be given
Wednesday night, January 14 at the
El Dorado Ballroom. This dance
will precede the club's first formal
which will be given January 27.
The club has offered assistance
to underprivileged children by giv-
ing them medical attention when
needed at the expense of the club.
The first child to receive such
treatments was little Miss Celestine
Randle.
The members were faithful and a
loyal last year but each resolved to
add a little more enthusiasm, in-
crease his loyalty and put forth
more efforts to help the club in
its achievements for 1942.

SOCIAL CLUB
Tme Gay' Glisteners Club held its
meeting Wednesday night Decem-
ber 31st at the home of Mrs. Ella
M. Evans wh6 served as hostess to
the club. Business of importance
wa discussed for a pre-Valentine
dance. The club was pleased to
have as its special guest. Miss Syl-
via Bowels from Port Arthur, she
is the teacher of the Lincoln High
School in that city, the sister of
Dean Bowels of the Houston Ne-
gro college, and we were pleased to
have Miss Lucille Mason to visit
with us from Brady. Miss Mason is
the guest of Miss Marvell Grimes.

The Charity Social Club will hold
its regular meeting Sunday, January
11, at 1721 Dowling street at 3:30
p. m. which will be the first meet-

At Dawn, Xmas
Miss Josephine Jackson was host-
ess to an early Christmas morning
breakfast at her home, 2603 Nashua
street.
Club . We were very sorry to know
that Mrs. Sam Botes and Mrs. I.
Green are on the sick list. We hope
them a speedy recovery. Mrs. M F.
Jackson presented to the club a slo-
gan, “Keep ’Em Growing and Aid
Faster Movement for Defense.1’ Aft-
er this resolution was read we vis-
ited a while with the hostess and
were served delicious refreshments,
cake and hot chocolate. Those pres-

CLUB
The Ladies of Valhalla held the
regular meeting Monday night, Jan-
uary 5, at 3518 Dowling with Mrs.
Octavia Johnson as hostess. The
business discussion was brief on ac-
count of the absence of several
members. The president is urging
all members to attend the follow-
ing meeting as business of great
importance will be discussed, which
requires each member to be present.
The next meeting will be with Mrs.
Estell Jefferson at 3518 Dowling on
January 12.

of Italian lace. The centerpiece was
a miniature Christmas tree, lighted
with small lights. On the buffet
was a large basket of Christmas
goodies tied with a red bow.
The hostess served broiled grape-
fruit halves, fried chicken, grits,
hot rolls, coffee.
The guests included Mr. and
Mrs. I. Wallace Hearne, Mr. and
Mrs. Sam Miller, E. Jasper, Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Davis, Mrs. Mildred
Spivey, Mr. and Mrs. Walter King.

Each guest Was presented with a
gift from the Christmas tree by the
hostess.

IN MISSISSIPPI
Mr. and Mrs. R. Weldon Daw-
son and daughters, Barbara Jean
and Eva Carol, spent the yuletide
holidays in Prentiss, Missisippi,
where they visited Mrs. Dawson’s
parents, Prof. and Mrs. J. E. John-
son, presdent of Prentiss Junior
Johnson, dean of the college. An-
other brother, Lawyer O. W. John-
college, and brother, Mr. Alcee L.
son came with his wife and children
from Indiana to witness this happy
family reunion.
Mr. and Mrs. Dawson are teach-
ers in the Jack Yates and Harper
Junior High schools respectively.

The union held its first meeting
for tne year which was a joyful
one with President Wallace In
charge. The members were all filled
with smiles and waiting patiently to
hear the quarterly and annual re-
port by the Secretary and Treasur-
er.

the reports. The same officers were
re-elected. The officers were glad to
be elected again and will start out
