How a Rich Man Starved.

"Starvation 1 Good cracious 1 the man was
worth $50000.
"I know that; nevertheless he died of
starvation. I tell you how It was. Jones was
always fancying that there was something the
matter with him; so he went to a doctor one
day and had himself examined and the doctor
inlormed him that he had kidney disease and
that beside taking medicine he must diet him-
self. Said the doctor : 'You must avoid all
kinds of salt meats salt fish potatoes cab-
bage ond vegetables of every kind.' Jones

being examined was infotmed that he must
avoid all kinds ol fresh meat also. This did
not do him any good as he thought and he
went to another doctor who highly approved
of the advice which had previously been given
and further warned him against all k'nds of
pastry likewise shell fish including oysters
and clams 'The best thing for you is a milk
diet' said the doctor; so Jones lived wholly

went to another doctor who cautioned him to
avoid milk above all things If he wanted to
get well. This rsduced Jones to a diet of
warm water und fresh air and finding himself
no better under this regimen he went to
another doctor who advised him to beware
of drinking too much water and being too
much In the air. This last advice cut off the
last of Jones' articles of diet and he died of
starvation as I have told you."
Music of the Locomotive
From tbo Now Orlcaus Tlmcs-Dcmoc-at.
"I was loafing around the streets last night"
said Jim Nelson to one of the oldest locomo-
tive engineers running into New Orleans
"and as I had nothing to do I stepped Into a
concert and heard a sick looking frenchman
play the piano In a way that made me feel all
over in spots. As soon as he sat down on the
stool I knew by the way he handled himself
that he understood the machine he was run-
ning. He tapped the keys awayup one end
just as if they were gauges and he wanted to
see If he had water enough. Then he looked
up as If he wanted to know how much steam
he was carrying and the next moment he
pulled open the throttle and sailed out on the
main line as if he was half an hour late.
"You could hear her thunder over culverts
and bridges and getting faster and faster un-
til the fellow rocket! about in his seat like a
cradle. Somehow I thoucht It was old '16'
pulling a passenger train and getting out of
tne way 01 a 'special.' the tcilow worked his
keys on the middle division like lightning and
then he flew along the north end of the line
until the drivers went around like a burz-saw
and I got excited. About (he time I was
fixinr; to tell him to cut her off a little he
kicked the dampers under the machine wide
open pulled the throttle away back In the
tender and Jerusalem jumpers I how he did
run! I couldn't stand it any longer and
yelled to him that she was 'pounding' on the
left side and if he wain't careful he'd drop
his ash-pan.
"But he didn't hear me. No one heard
me. Everything was flying and whining.
Telegraph poles on this side of the track
looked like a row of cornstalks the trees ap-
peared to be a mud bank and all the exhaust
of the old machine sounded like the hum of a
bumblebee. I tried to yell out but my
tongue wouldn't move. He went around the
curves like a bullet supped an eccentric.
blew out his soft plug went down grades 50
feet to the mile and not a confounded brake
set. Sh went by the meeting point at a mile
and a hall a minute and calling for more
steam. My hair itood up like a cat's tail be-
cause I knew the game was up.
"Sure enough dead ahead of us was the
headlight of the ispeclal.' In a daze I heard
the crash as they struck and I saw cars
shivered Into atoms people mashed and
mancled. and blcedine and casplni! for water.
I heard another crash as the French professor
struck the deep keys away down on the lower
end of the southern division and then I came
to my semes. There he was at a dead stand
still with the door of the fire box of the
machine onen. wlDinr the nreiniration off his
face and bowing at the people before him. If
I live to be a thousand years old I'll never
lorgci toe twe inat frenchman gave me on
a piano.

A Minister's Mistake.
Formerly It was the custom more than at
present to "have up notes" in the pulpit for
lem of friends etc. A neighboring clergyman
on an exchange read notice that Mr. A. de-
sired prayers that the death of his wife might
be sanctified to him etc and the clergyman
prayed most earnestly for the brother sitting
lonely and desolate In his pew etc. He no-
ticed a rustling In the congregation and to
his consternation learned that the note had
been shut up in the Bible a year and the man
had his new wife for the first time In the pew.
The good people smiled. fNewbutyport

my advice to a young man would be to put his
money Into real estate."
It might go down" suggested a youog

you kin git Into a new town and buy the only
piece of rolling ground In the neighborhood
you're dead 'sure of selling out for a grave
yard inside of a year. I've located and sold
out 17 grave yard sites during my life
time and have doubled on each one. Wheat
Is all right and hay is all right but pick fur
