A Game Chicken Tries to Whip nn I

Frank Scott bctler known as Rattletnake
Dill who lives in Newcombville It In trouble;
not on account of Eliza but of his come
chicken. It was a real beauty and had such
spirit that Frank would nothave taken a $100
bill Tor it. The bird havincr vanautshed all
other birds looked around and like the
great Alexander sighed lor other worlds to
conquer. His other world came in the form
01 an engine ai lie got on ine rauroaa track
and crowed. "While I live I'll crow" was
evidently hia motto The engineer rane his
bell threw water on the bird but he fought
the engine until the cowcatcher struck him an
unluckly blow and sent him to the chicken's
paradise if they have one. Frank now
weeps for his chicken and wants the com
panv to dry his tears by pavine its value

PUTTY THEFTS.
Another Gone lndlcntlve of the Absolute
Necessity fur t Keforiuntory.
Yesterday a negro boy named Willie
earcy entered the store of Mrs. Louis
Rhein nearly opposite the Sunset depot and
there.emptled the cash drawer supposed to
contain about $11. The thief got clear off
but the police are on nls track.
These petty thefts by colored boys are be
coming very numerous and annoying. The
thieves watch the owner out of the shop and
then seize anvthinc that is handy but ifnos
sible in all cases make for the cash drawer
Many of the oQenders are known to the
police and have been frequently arrested but
they are too young to be dealt with as crim-
inal" and in the absence ol a reformatory are
released only to commit further crimes
1 hese circumstances tend to show the abso
lute necessity for a reformatory.
AT IT AGAIN.
The Dudes nud tho Mashcre nt Work In
Travis Furk.
The dudes and the mashers were out in
strong force yesterday in Travis park during
the band's performance. Attired in their $5
suits for the most part yellow and white
striped they were apparently dressed to kill
They wandered about gazing impudently at
111c gins iuiKiii; luuuiy auu trying iu maKC
themselves as ridiculous as they possibly
could. This is of course a free country and
if such men (?) will play the fool they are at
liberty to do so but it makes observers sorry
iu uuuk uiai uicy can so lar ucscenu in ine
scale of manhood and leads to a strong belief
in the Darwin theory that man descended
from the ape with this addition that these
men are reverting to their original species
TKAVIS l'AItlf. CONCERT.
Why Not Erect More Seats nud Kxtarml
nato the l'osty lted Ants?
There was a large attendance in Travis
park yesterday and although the band com.
menced the performance somewhat later than
usual it was none the less acceptable to th
many present. The bandmaster will in future
commence a little later than usual but the
time will be advertised in the programmes
published in the Light on the dav previous.
Many complaints were made yesterday ol
ine ausence 01 a sumcient number 01 seats lor
the accommodation of the public and th
prevalence of the pesty red ant which made
11 inconvenient 10 su on ine grasi. 11 was
thought that if I lie city could not afford to
provide more seats they should at least do
something to exterminate the ants.
