SATUKDAY MAV B 1883
Hotter the Beast has liberally disinfected
the moral atmosphere of Massachusetts.
"Eu Pkrkins" had better suspend his
"Greek jokes." That tort of thing is better
done In Texas.
Nrw York City has just passed through
the time-honored ordeal now near or quite a
century old of annual house hunting and
moving on the 1st of May.
The Stite of Ohio is becoming lively with
the bustle and slir of approaching battle.
More thin ever there is no telling who will
be Governor till after the election.
The United States Government is popu-
lating Lake Michigan with young white fish.
There are to be 8000000 brought to it during
the season.
The New York city police have bagged an
entire gang of counterfeiters who had the
hardihood to counterfeit the Government's 92
cent silver dollar. It is bad enough to have
the genuine on our hands but to send out a
conterfcit is a combination of temerity and
audacity altogether unheard of. The authors
of such an exploit should have the full benefit
of the law.
l'KISON A HUSKS.
We are shown the fearful working of the
State prison contract system in New York in
a brief pamphlet written by an educated ex-
convict giving an account of what he saw and
knew while expiating his offense under a three
years' sentence in the prison at Auburn. He
makes no complaint on his personal account
is modest and moderate in his dealings with
those whose atrocities he makes known and
seems altogether a qualified and creditable
witness.
It is idle and wasteful to spend time and
labor in reproaches and criminations of the
venal and guilty because it is only a new ex-
hibit of the old frailties that belong to natute
and society with which all are sufficiently
familiar already. The fault is in the system .
Reform lies in expunging methods. Under
the prison contract system 'any State or nation
will grow abuses and differ only in the degrees
of turpitude involved.
It is to be hoped the time is at hand
when the sordid rapacity of men that finds
victims in every condition of life will yet in
all the Ftates be kept out of our prisons that
the penalties of crime which are suffered most
by those who are not the criminals by wiv
sisters mothers children wdl not be longer
augmented by this flagrant abuse. Until a
wider and more comprehensive reform swal'
lows up equally our present methods and mo
lives in dealing with crime and criminals
and gives us prison homes founded on the
principles and faith of the good Samaritan
let us at least preserve the integrity of the
system we have although not 19 founded.
A ItOYAI 15XPI.ANATION.
It may not have been generally noticed
that Her Majesty Queen Victoria's royal
cousin King Cetewayo of Zululand has sent
no message of condolence or congratulation
to Her Majesty on account of the late ncci
dent to Her Majesty's royal knee. It is no
wonder on account of His Majesty's engross
ing duties in the canvass now pending for his
royal office there being a chief totally un
known to the European royal families named
Usiliefs running in opposition to His
Majesty. The canvass is conducted with
more than American zeal and with something
like the severity of His Majesty's campaign in
Ireland or that of the royal Alexander III.
among the sanguinary Nihilists of Russia ; for
it Is said the casualties among the Zululanders
are already greatly in excess of the mortal
ity In the late little unpleasantness with Hrr
Urilish Majesty in which His Royal High-
nets the candidate for sovereign in France
under the title of Napoleon IV. lost his life.
It is discovered that they do not cuttivate the
sublime art of stulfisg ballot boxes in Zulu
land but the obnoxious voter that is to say
the voter who does not vote the right ticket
is put out of the way somewhat in the American
style in the thrilling days of Know Nothing
prevalence and hence finally relieved from
further anxiety about the success of his party.
The life and success of Hl Msjesty Cetewayo
therefore depends upon the pattizans of His
Majesty exercising greater diligence than
these of Usiliefs as when the issue is dc
termined only the one candidate and one
party wilt survive. It is thus seen that His
Majesty Cetewayo incurs a risk which is th
full equivalent of the European hazard now
so prevalent of losing his crown and with it
his royal life and the consequence is that the
sprained royal knee of Her Majesty the
Queen of England and Ireland has esciped
his royal attention. Hut doubtless if His
Majesty should evade the worse than Nihilists
ofZululand and save his crown and with it
his royal life he will make the amende royal
and in future give proper attention during
convalescence to the royal Urilish knee. It
docs seem that royalty is the same every-
where. Norwegian lletlirothal
As soon as a young man and young woman
are engaged in Norway no matter in what
rank of life betrothal rings are exchanged.
These rings are worn ever afterwards by the
men as well as by the women. The conse-
quence is that one can always tell a married
man or at least an engaged man in Norway
in the same way as one can tell a married
woman in England when she shows her hand.
Gold rings are used by the rich but silver
either solid or in filigree by the poor. There
is no married man in Norway no matter how
humble he may be who does not bear this
outward mark of his submission to the malri
monial bond. But this is not all. As soon
as a man is engaged he has calling cards
printed with the name of his fiancee immedi-
ately below his own.
Htiltiu'H Lovuof Flowers.
Of the many touching tributes paid to flow
ers there is one associated with the closing
hours of Henry Heine the poet which ap-
pears to be very beautiful. He was dying in
'aris. 1 he doctor was standine by Ins bed
side when Heine pressed his hand and said
Doctor you are my menu I ask a last fa
vor. Tell me the truth. The end is fast ap-
proaching is it not?" The doctor was silent.
'1 hank you" said Heine calmly "Have
you any request to make?" asked the doctor
muchmoved. "Yes" replied the poet. "My
wife sleeps do no t disturb her. Take from
the table the fragrant fbwers 'she brought me
this morning I love flowers so dearly. Thanks
I'loce them on my breast ' He paused as he
inhaled their perfume. His eyes closed and
le murmured "flowers now beautllul is
nature." These were his last words as his
spirit took its flight to eternity.
