COTTON. I
Notes on the Hnrly lll.torv nnd use of that 1
Valuable Plant.
A writer in the New Orleans Times-Democrat
in an article on cotton says this well nigh
indispensible article to modern civilization
derives its English name from the Arabic
koton. It is indigenous to the tropical re-
gions of both hemispheies. Herodotus 450
years U. C makes the first mention of it in
history as the product of trees in India fleece
more beautiful and delicate lhan that of the
sheep and speaks of cloth made from it. It
is quite probable that it had been known and
used in that country centuries before that date.
In this country the manufacture of cotton
cloth appears to have been well understood
by the Mexicans nnd Peruvians long before
the discovery of America ty Europeans.
Among the rich presents which Cortez re-
ceived from Montezuma were curtains cover-
lets and robes of cotton line as silk ol rich
and various dyes interwoven with 'feather
work that rivaled the delicacy of painting.
The Mexicans also fabricated the white cotton
cloth and even converted the material into a
rude kind of paper. Of course thess ancien
people didn't have the cin nor the other
modern appliances of machinery and power
but they appear to have carried the manufac-
ture of cotton to a great perfection with the
distaff and spindle. So that the cotton manu-
facturing industry of the world which to-day
is perhaps second tn no other enterprise has
had an infancy of centuries and now seems
to be in the prime of youth with its manhood
and old age yet to follow.
All Important Jlncovery.
M Neville writes from Tel-el-Masehuta to
announce that the excavations undertaken by
him on that site for the Egyptian exploration
fund have already yielded a result of the first
historical and geographical importance. This
site (Tel-el-Maschuta) roughly midway be-
tween Ismalia and Tel-el-Kebir is proved by
an inscription to be at nnce the Pithom and
the Succoth of the Uible. Pithom was the
sacred n;me descriptive of the temple and
Succoth (Tutu) the civil appellation. We
read of Pithom as one of the cities built by
the Israelite!; during the oppression (Ex. 1.
1 1( and Succoth was their first station in the
march of the exodus (xii. 37; xili. 20). The
discovery not only places Pithdm-Succoth on
the map but in doing so gives us at last a fixed
point on the route of the Israelites out of
Egypt.
