VOIGK OF TIIK VIIUS8.
El Pi so Times says El Paso will have
25000 inhabitants two years from now.
The Marshall Messenger says the testi-
mony In the Russell trial imacked of Star
route villainy.
Fort Worth Democrat : The most dis-
tinguished liars of the age have rallied to the
assistance of Dorsey in the Star route trial.
The Pearsall News says nothing would con-
trlbute more to the prosperity of that town
than .direct railway communication with the
gulf.
Waco Examiner; The Legislature ought
at least to be able to adjourn prettily soon.
It seems to stumble at everything else that is
important.
The Brazos Pilot thinks tint grand juries
and petit juries are indespensible and will
always be needed in the enforcement of crim-
inal laws.
Cleburne Chronicle : The lobby ought to
be killed out at all hazards. A good plan
would be lo do the opposite of what the
lobby wants done on all occasions.
Austin County Times: Now that the
Legislature has refused to ratify the peniten-
tiary lease it remains for action to be taken
relative to their management and a syste-
matic method of working them be prescribed.
New York Times: If Judge Gresham
shall fulfill the promise which his previous
career holds out he will contribute to the ad-
ministration precisely that strength which
the country will be very glad to tee it pos-
sess. Texas Siftings: The refusal of the Texas
Legislature to reduce the tax on occupations
from which one-third of the entire State rev-
enue has been raised is likely to prove an
unfavorable advertisement for a State of such
vast and growing resources.
Galveston News : With the advance of
Southern agriculture in variety of products
more persons anil greater capital will be occu-
pied wilh special husbandries and relatively
fewer persons and less capital engaged in the
exclusive production of cotton.
Lampasas Daily Globe: The prospects
for another good fruit crop in Texas are
promising at present. The late season has
greatly retarded the opening of fruit buds
and gives the youog fruit a better chance to
escape the frosts that often occur in March.
Gainesville Independent: Our solons at
Austin might give additional testimony of
their devotion to a grateful constituency by
cirinL' a black eve to the tariff robberv. A
little memorial for instance in the shape of
an expression ol their views on the subject to
Congress.
Atlantic Constitution (Democratic): Kel-
logg it getting along in years. He is still try-
ing to prove that he is honest. With two
dozen Louisiana witnesses at his back ready
to swear anything on earth it is a little singu-
lar that Kellogg should be compelled to write
telegraphic cards.
Mexia Ledger: We were astonished to
see the efforts some of our solons made when
the appropriation bill was up for considera-
tion to cut down to the smallest ratio the ap-
propriation for the care of the deaf and dumb
and the insane who heaven knows have
suffered enough already on account of the
neglect or avarice of somebody.
lloiton Herald: The old Puritan Sunday
it gone and it cannot be restored by arresting
concert singers for "Sabbath breaking" or by
any other legal device. Sunday laws like
other enactments must be sustained by the
moral sense of the community or they will be
dead Utters. It is for Connecticut to say how
far the old laws shall be modified in the interest
of the greatest good to the greatest number.
Washing on Republican : Where was Pre'
sident Tilden while the alleged usurper Ilayss
was sloshing about as our morning neighbor
charges " in a stolen office V Did he ever
make a move to assert his title? If he was
elected as is claimed he was a traitor to his
country to allow his place to be occupied un-
challenged for four years by a pretender. We
owe our neighbor one for so fresh ami savory
a topic.
New York Herald: England has her
Nihilists and the sooner she recognizes that
they are an infinitely more dangerous and
venomous breed than those of Russia the
sooner she will take effective measures to get
rid of them. For our own part we believe
they are so safely intrenched behind the real
grievances which aimct their country they
will never be destroyed until those grievan-
ces are righted. The war has now been
fairly begun and must go on pitilessly to tne
end.
Cincinnati Times-Star: By summarily
breaking up the Socialist Congress at Copen
hagen and warning the delegates to gather
their grip sacks and go the King of Denmark
takes his place among the crowned cowards
of Europe. These men had gathered peacea-
blp and whatever incendiary acts or lan-
guage they may have meditated they are? not
reported to have indulged in violent threats or
intemperate speeches when they were dis-
persed. It is difficult for an American to re-
concile such interference as this wilh human
liberty.
St. Louis Globe Democrat : It is a little
singular that ;the Treasury department Is dis-
posed to put difficulties of one kind or other
in the way of the issue of gold certificates
while going even to the extent of violating
law in order to push the Inferior silver certifi-
cates into circulatign. The Government
practically offers a premium for the taking ol
silver certificates by Issuing them through the
Sub-Treasury here upon the deposit of gold
in New York. But it does not pay out gold
cettificates here on deposit of gold in New
York. There is no warrant for this discrimi-
nation against the superior money '
