1766 - Texas' first recorded hurricane strikes near
Galveston.
1813 - First newspaper in Texas, Gaceta de Texas, is
founded by Jos6 Alvarez de Toledo in Nacogdoches.
1821 - Spanish government grants permission to
Moses Austin to settle 300 families in Texas. After his
death, son Stephen F. Austin renegotiates the contract
in 1822 with newly independent Mexico.
- Mexico declares independence from Spain.
- Jane Long gives birth to a daughter, Mary James,
thought to be the first Anglo child born in Texas.
1822 - Jared E. Groce brings the first cottonseed into
Texas.
1826 - Fredonian Rebellion begins in Nacogdoches.
1830 - Law of April 6 is passed by Mexican govem-
ment, stopping legal immigration into Texas from
United States except in special cases, and becomes
primary factor in growing unrest with Mexican rule.
1832 - First blood of Texas Revolution is shed at Bat-
tle of Velasco.
1835 - Gall Borden begins publishing the newspaper,
"Telegraph and Texas Register."

ends in battle on March 6, in which all remaining
defenders are killed.
- On March 27, about 300 Texans prisoners were
executed at Goliad by order of Gen. Antonio L6pez de
Santa Anna.
- Troops led by Sam Houston defeat the Mexican
army led by Santa Anna at San Jacinto near Houston
on April 21.
- On May 14, Santa Anna and Texas' provisional
president David Bumet sign two Treaties of Velasco,
ending the Texas Revolution.
1837 - Republic of Texas is officially recognized by
United States, and later by France, England, the Neth-
erlands and Belgium.
1839 - First homestead exemption act is passed.
1839-1844 - Five-year Regulator-Moderator War in
Shelby, Panola and Harrison counties between vigi-
