Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
What Can You Do For It?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that
drives many patients to chiropractic clinics. Symptoms can
include wrist, hand or forearm pain, numbness and tingling.
The following is a list of what you might expect when you visit a
Doctor of Chiropractic for CTS:
1) History. Information about job-related stressors, hobby-
related causes (ie. carpentry or playing musical instruments),
phone work, or factory work - especially if it’s fast and repetitive.
2) Exam: To determine area and severity of nerve compression.
3) X-rays: To evaluate the alignment of the bones and check
for arthritis or bone disease.
4) Treatment: Can include manipulation, massage, and therapy
(electric muscle stimulation, cold laser therapy, and/or traction).
5) Home Therapies: A carpal tunnel splint keeps your wrist
in a neutral position. This position places the least amount of
stretch on the nerves and tendons that travel through the wrist
Wrist exercises and stretching, as well as neck, upper back and
shoulder stretches, are a must. Job modifications may be neces-
sary to avoid aggravating CTS.
