A MAIN STREET STROLL
Strolling down Main Street
looking in
the windows, greeting friends and passing the
time of day has been a part of Hereford since
its beginning. In the beginning the stroll was
down Dewey Avenue and the street was a
"rutted, grass tufted thoroughfare" where
businesses occupied two full blocks of frame
buildings on the west side of the street and
scattered buildings on the east side into the
third block.
Included were D.R. Gass and Sons General
Store; Meeks and Conoley, meat market;
W.B. Garvin's restaurant; the post office;
Burns and Higgins, groceries; George Dale,barber; Jack Harwell, saloon; Charley
Bounds, drug store; F.L. Vanderburgh, printing
office; Joe Killough, confectionery; Garner
and Patton, general merchandise; Smith,
Walker and Co., general merchandise and a
wagon and feed yard; Stringfellow-Hume
Hardware; Dr. R.H. Gough, drugs; Humphrey
Hotel; McLaughlin Furniture Store;
Witherspoon and Gough, real estate, also
lawyers; Hereford National Bank and Richey
Hotel.
The courthouse which had been moved
from LaPlata was situated east of Dewey
Avenue. South of the tracks on Dewey Avenue
were the Stambaugh and Lipscomb
Wagon and Feed Yard and lumber yards
operated by A.G. McAdams and J.C. Newman.
Other businesses in 1900 were B.T.
Hinton's Livery Stable and a blacksmith shop
operated by H.G. Tucker.
Quite a little town from its beginnings in
1898 when a restaurant operated by W.H.
Clarey, a stock of groceries in a tent operated
by a Mr. Adair and another restaurant operated
by a Mr. Burnam completed the list of
businesses.
