This unqualified testimony ot the
Democratic Mayor does not please
his friends aud the insinuation is
made that a little pan-American fat
will oil the Mayor’s fingers for that

it isungenerous. Can not a democrat

Evangeline the Beautiful.
Evangeline and her pet heifer must
have been treated with the Brown-
Sequard elixir for both were as
frisky at the Grand last evening as
upon the first appearance of Gabriel’s
beloved in his old burlesque
revival of this popular stage attrac-
tion was a most pronounced success.
With a natural pride in his reintro-
duction of Vangy to the public that
first enjoyed the clever work of
Messrs. Rice & Goodwin the old-time
favorite has been decked out in the
gayest sort of attire aud given scenes
and properties of the most gorgeous
description. It has never had a
brighter setting and few of the
many companies engaged in its per-
formance in years past have equalled
in general merit that which gave it
last evening. The glitter of the
Amazonion army the wealth of color
in tiie tropical settings the beauty of
all the tableaux and the admirable
taste shown throughout this produc-
tion insures a still further lease of
popularity for this well known stage
attraction.
It is needless to say Mr. Janies S.
Matfit still fills the important role of
the lone fisherman and stives its neg-
ative characteristics and its varied
stage business due prominence as ef
yore. The only George K. Fortesque
is still the delicate tenderand fondly
loving Catherine and without at-
tempting to give the details of the
costumes chosen for the role it may
be said that trie fair enslaver looked
“just too lovely.” The new Evange-

arils sof pleasing presence and ] os-
sesseit of a good voice which was
beard with much satisfaction especi-
ally in the “Where Art Thou?” Miss
Bessie Tannabill the Gabriel is a

Daly a clever comedian who adds
another to his many successes in his
impersonation of this familiar role.
Miss Ella Rock leads the Amazonian
band with distinguished dash and
grace of carriage aud the principals
of her gallant corps are well chosen.
The policeman is Mr. Harry Kelly
who has inherited the genius ot his
father who originated this line of
character parts and the principal
scene for this role gained great pro-
minence last evening by his clever
work. The heifer held the undivided
attention of the audience during the
famous dance and all the other as-
