PHILADELPHIA'S KOSE.
Some Facts Concerning the Life and Pros-
pects of Miss Kose Eytinge.
Miss Rose Eytinge is one of the best known
and most popular artistes on the American
stage. She is a member of the Eytinge family
of Philadelphia Pennsylvania and was born
in that city in September 1835. She is conse-
quently in the 48th year of her age. She made
her debut in Brooklyn in 1852 when she was
17 years of age and since that time has
appeared in all parts of the country.
Miss Eytinge is married to Cyrus Searle an
English actor who has recently gained golden
laurels by his impersonation of Coupeau in
Charles Reade’s “Drink” an adaption of
Zola’s “L’Assomoir” fairly rivaling that of
Warner the original performer of that char-
acter in England. Mr. Searle and his talented
wife propose to bring “Drink” into this theat-
rical circuit during next season.
How the name Eytinge is pronounced has
been and is a question of public dispute.
Some pronounce it “Eyeting others “Eye-
tinzh” still others “Ettinzh;” but the lady
and her husband call it “Etting.”
ST. LOUIS SPOOKS.
Nocturnal Spectres Which Make Frantic
Persuns to Whom They Appear.
St. Louis is troubled by spooks. One ap-
pears in the Criminal court where Johnny
Parker a murderer awaiting the penalty for
his crime and his brave patient trusting
loving little wife committed suicide. The
night after the death of Parker and his wife a
watchman entered the room. It was mid-
night a single gas jet burned dimly and vague
shadows appeared. Suddenly the watchman
felt himself enveloped with some substance
which at .first seemed to be a garment but
which according to his own account he sub-
sequently realized was only a thick dark
atmosphere. Then to continue the story by
using the language of the St. Louis Chronicle
“ a shudder passed over his frame and he re-
traced his steps and as he did so his airy
covering became less dense and finally dis-
appeared. He recited his story to the engi-
neer and that personage laughed at his fears.
The next night he visited the court-room again
under a bright gas light and with a revolver
in his coat pocket. As he approached the
crimsoned spot the light faded into darkness
and he felt himself in contact with 'ome un-
known power who assailed him in silence.
He drew his revolver and put forth his arm to
attack his invisible foe; he met with no resist-
ance. Then his face was slapped and a
thousand noises sounded in his ears but he
struggled forward to the great entrance and in
terror again visited the engineer and told him
of the mystery. Again he was jeered at but
he insists that he is not a victim of delusion.”
Other spooks are reported to be in South
St. Louis where they manifest themselves by
frightening an aged woman living alone in a
small frame house. A few days ago some
men actuated by sympathy for the unhappy
woman undertook to reason with the ghosts.
They first drank a large quantity of liquor
presumably for the purpose of increasing their
courage. Then they entered the house. A
hob-goblin performance of an extraordinary
nature was in store for them. A table chairs
pans and other household effects began to
turn and strike the walls. It seemed the men
declare as if everything in the room had a
thousand tongues and all were clamoring dis-
cordantly. Frightened the men began to
retreat. To add to their terror pots and pans
followed them to the door. They rushed to a
priest’s house and implored the father to dis-
pell the demons. It is reported that he advised
them to take the pledge before making further
investigation.
