“It is an old fogy idea but we believe
it to be true that the completion of the
Ban Antonio opera-house has damaged
that city as much as would a cyclone or
an epidemic ” Thus writes the editor
of the Floresville Chronicle yet in the
same paper he tells that he came all the
way from Floresville to gee Booth at the
opera-house how he enjoyed it. and adds
that be wouldn't have missed tbe treat
for a great deal. The Chronicle is
usually lively and correct but in th's

A Duet.
At the Saengerfest mixed chorus last
night the leading soprano was singing
a beautiful part from tbe Erl King’s
daughter. In tbe most thrilling lines a
cat. which had evidently been smuggled
Into the gallery by some small boys
Joined a fine alto with the soprano of the
singer and in It* every note showed
that It was thoroughly up to music. Fi-
nally however tbe cat began to execute
the st*c-cat-o movement and this threw
tbe lady accompanist out and yielded to
tbe baton of Prof. Carl Beck who with-
out response asked “where 1* that cat?”

to see these goods; they are
the best that were ever brought to
this market. In connection with this
Mr. Wolfson has a large lot of unlaun-
dred shirts which ns to quality of ma-
terial careful make up and low price
surpass anything in that line ever
brought to th:* market.

up of a gentleman's dress that tends to
set him off to advantage more than tine
tasteful and stylish head dress. Tbe

colors hard and soft from ordinary to
the finest silk felt and are being offered
at prices that defy competition. Tbe

We Must Put Our Shoulders to The
Wheel.
Editor Licht:
It strikes my mind that there is abun-
dance of capital resident In Ban Anto-
nio to put the refrigerating factory in
successful operation without having to
call on tbe aid of capitalists outside the
city limits. If capitalists in other sec-
tions are willing to subscribe to tbe
capital stock no obstacles should be
thrown in their way; but San Anton o
should be ashamed to otter to give for-
eign capitalists a bonus to get them to
start a profitable enterprise here.
The proposition reputed to have been
submitted by tbe Marquis De Mores
when it comes to be sifted and exam-
inedwill be found to be really no propo-
sition at all. As I understand it be and
bis company put little or no money into
the scheme—yet they propose to be on
hand with hamper baskets when tbe
profits are to be divided. We can cer-
tainly do better than we can by accept-
ing bis proposition. That at least is my
idea.
San Antonio should startout with the
fixed determination that she will bave a
beef refrigerating factory and then pro-
ceed to raise tbe funds at $lOO per share
and the entire city be canvassed for
subscription of stock and tbe requisite
sum will undoubtedly be obtained. We
must put our own shoulders to tbe wheel
not passively wait for foreign capital to
build up San Antonio. If it was to eiect
a new brewery men would rush for-
ward io take stock in it; but a beef re-
frigerating establishment will be more
beneficial to our city than would a dozen
breweries in full blast.
It would make San Antonio the lead-
ing market in west Texas for the sale of
beef cattle and this would be a peren-
nial stream of wealth. The cattle ien
who sold their beeves here would cer-
tainlv spend a large portion of the money
received by them In our city.
This city would become the leading
market In the United States for the sale
of hides.
Now every person in San Antonio is
bound rohebenetitted by whatsoever in-
creases trade and business of the city
and brings in fresh population and cap-
ital. The increase in business would in-
crease the amount ot money in clrcula
tion stimulate the building boom and
impart briskness to real estate transac-
tions. In order for us to have a live
town we must show we are live men—-
alive to the necess’ty of using our op-
p rtunities and realizing the possibili-
ties of the future. Chicago. Kansas City
and Atlanta—prove what pluok and en-
terprise will accomplish in bu’liling up
a cltv and should stimulate us to exert
every jot and tittle of our energy and
vim We must have faith in the future
growth of San Antonio and eschew
croaking but at the same time we must
remember that “faith witbout works
Is dead.” Our faith in the future growth
of Ban Antonio must be supported by
■•works” by helping home industries
and enterprises. Toney.
By No Means Deb-Rate.
It is said that Kate Vaughan the
Gaiety theatre (London) dancer is com-
ing over to America. She is nothing for
us if she has no scandal attached to ber.
Kate Vaughan is a particularly graceful
delicate-looking girl who has made her-
self popular on tbe burlesque stage by
tbe supple elegance of her style and tbe
picturesque tightness of her dresses.
She was originally in the smallest of
London music balls and first appeared
on the regular stage of Drury Lane
in a pantomine. From thence she
came to the Gaiety Theatre and for
several years was one of the popular
quartet headed by TerryRoyce and Nel-
lie Farren. Kate Vaughan was very
soon notorious. Her first serious flirta-
tion was with a well known criminal
barlster who bas since been made judge
in India.
The next man who was known to have
thrown his cap and gloves over tbe
windmill* for her wa« John Delacour
one of the best-looking swells in London.
His good looks were of no avail
in tbe end for tbe nephew of the
Duke of Wellington Col. Fred
Wellesley of the Guards by no means a
handsome man. carried her off to Vien-
na where be was pursued by the Indig-
nant John with sword and pistols. Col.
Wellesley however.did not care to meet
bl* predecessor and made a rapid exit
with the beautiful Kate—an exit hasten-
ed. perhaps by tbe fact bis(the colonel'*)
own wife was then staying at the
Grand hotel in tbe tame city.

Imaginative Interviews.
The Floresville Chronicle says:
“The account of an interview with
Sara Bernhardt which appeared last
week in the Express was good very
good. That bright young gentleman
Mr. Dickenson reporter of the Express
got it off. He also wrote the account of
an interview with Patti as she passed
tbiouuh on ber way to the City of Mex-
ico. Tbe Imaginaiive reporter never
saw either of them.”
It Is not fair to blame Dickenson for
tbe Patti bogus interview. It was the
other imaginative-politico-reporter that
raised Patti’s Ire and occasioned her de-
nunciation.
