“Our Volksfest.”
Editor Evkning Light:
Under the above heading I notice an article
in the morning’s Express in which the entire
credit for the origin and final consummation
of the coming Volksfest is attributed to Dr.
Lindner recently of Houston. It is one of
the many examples of the lose way the Express
picks up its information and misleads the
public.
Now the real fact is that Mr. Carl Runge
a modest unassuming member of the 1 urner
association is really the parent of the enter-
prise having proposed it last year and was
defeated but nothing daunted he again pro-
posed the Volksfest this year and carried his
point. But the proposition might have died at
its birth but for the nursing and incessant
care of Dr. Hadra whose efforts both in as-
sociations and out have really crowned the
Volksfest with success. I do not say
this to depreciate the valuable services
of Dr. Lindner who has great-
ly aided in the matter and in fact the credit
should be divided between all who have so
generously given their time and efforts to-
wards making the Volksfest a success and I
believe Dr. Lindner himself will join me in
above explanation. Dr. Lindner’s experience
has been of great value to all concerned and
he is fully appreciated but it is too bad at
this stage in the affair to have unnecessary
jealousies aroused by the indiscrete remarks of
the Express. One Who Knows.
The Death of Mr. D. H. Rheiner.
Mr. D. H. Rheiner died last night at 7
o’clock at his residence on Camargo street.
He was a native of St. Gallen in Switzerland
and has been in the city for many years work-
ing as a carpenter during which time he has
earned a good reputation. The funeral will
take place from the residence this evening at
4 o’clock.
The Light offers its sympathy to the
mourning family of the deceased.
Trinity M. E- Church.
The attendants of Trinity M. E. church are
about to lose its pastor the Rev. J. A. Kerr
who is obliged to retire to Clinton lowa in
order to recover his family’s health. 'I he
Rev. J. A. Kerr has during his pastorate
here made many friends and has worked hard
for Christianity and for the many social move-
ments with which he has been associated.
The congregation regret this compulsory sepa-
ration but he has their good wishes and there
is a prospect of a continuance of the pleasant
relation now existing if Mr. Kerr’s health be-
comes sufficiently restored.
The present pastor will be succeeded by the
Rev. L. H. Bready of Lancing Michigan.
The Literary and Debating Society.
The weekly meeting of the society was held
at the district court room last evening. Vice
President Gerald Griffin occupying the chair.
In the absence of Mr. R. E. Nelson the
appointed essayest the debate opened on the
question “Resolved that Chinese emigration
be restricted" in which Messrs. T. T. Martin
and B. F. N ail had been appointed to support
the affirmative and Messrs. J. H. Meehan and
Clive Shook the negative. As the two last
named members were absent Mr Tom Har-
rison undertook to appear for the latter at his
request and Vice President Gerald Griffin for
Mr. Meehan.
The Vice President then called Mr. H.
Ryder-Taylor to the chair and the debate pro-
ceeded which was ably conducted on both
sides. The chairman gave credit to the neg-
ative for the excellent way in which they had
supported their case at short notice but
awarded the credit of best debaters to the
speakers upon the affirmative side. The gen-
eral debate being in order Mr. Brice Grimes
was upon motion called to address the meet-
ing. He spoke as a resident in California for
thirty years and as an officer of the California
society and he delivered an admirable ad-
dress. He was followed by Messrs. C. C.
Armstrong and R. J. Kendall. Mr. C. M.
Barnes was also on motion allowed to speak.
The society then by an almost unanimous
vote decided to adopt the resolution.
Mr. Brice Grimes was awarded a vote of
thanks for his address to which he made suit-
able acknowledgment.
On motion to amend the by-laws the chair-
man appointed Messrs. Kendall Martin and
Wilbur as a committee to frame fines for
absence and misconduct to report at the next
meeting.
Messrs. Hermann Heiligmann Frank Cald-
well J. C. Cochran and L. S. Darrow were
named as debaters and Mr. Gerald Griffin as
essayest for Thursday. May 25th next.
The meeting then adjourned.
Complaint is made that in moving the office
of Messrs. Ross & Harris the building has
been left standing for some days diagonally
on the crossing of Medina street at the back
of Steves’ lumber yard. Here it is in the way
of the general street communication and
makes a breach of the city ordinances.
