The statement of the Smith assault »s
given in the Times is false as to the cause of
the attack. Smith made an unprovoked and
so far as Newcomb was concerned an unex-
pected assault upon him.
Ths San Antonio Literary and Debating
Society.
The usual weekly meeting of the Literary
and Debating society was held in the district
court room last night the President J. H.
Copeland occupying the chair.
The secretary (H. Ryder-Taylor) having
read the minutes Mr. C. L. Gruzveski read
an interesting paper on the true position of
woman. The debate on Free Trade vs. Pro-
tectioh was then in the absence of the six de-
baters taken up as a general debate. Messrs.
C. L. Gruzevski T. Harrison C. C. Arm-
strong and R. J. Kendall arguing for
the affirmative and Messrs. T. T. Martin and
H. Ryder-Taylor for the negative. The so-
ciety by vote decided in favor of free Irade.
Mr. Wilbur proposed to introduce a scale of
tines for absence etc.
Messrs. Martin Muckle Meehan and
Locker were appointedidebaters for 1 hurs-
day. May nth and Mr. R. E. Nelson essay-
ist for the same evening.
The name of Mr. Maule was substituted as
essayist for next week in place of J. IL
Copeland.
Mr. Dougherty was elected a member of
the society.
The meeting then adjourned.
Lawlor-Murchie Complimentary Concert.
A large and enthusiastic audience attended
the grand concert and ball held at Turner hall
last night complimentary to Messrs. C. B.
Lawlor and J. R. Murchie which may be in
every way regarded as a great success.
Some disappointment was experienced at
the non-appearance of Madame Ealo which
was occasioned by indisposition but her place
was kindly and well filled by Mrs. Katzen-
berger at an hour’s notice who though only
just recovered from a severe spell of sickness
sang with great foree and pathos Balfe’s
charming ballad “I Dreamt that I Dwelt in
Marble Halls” and was rapturously encored.
The instrumental music furnished by a part
of the 22nd infantry band was excellent. Two
of the band Messrs John Luschinger (comet)
and W. A. Ringstrom (claronet) rendering
admirable solos Col. Fraser a distinguished
visitor to our city gave a forcible and power-
ful reading from King John and J. R. Mur
chie who was in excellent voice sang the
"Village Blacksmith” with such power and
style rarely heard on our local stage. Masters
Lionel and Alexander Varga two boys aged
about 12 years cleverly executed a piano
forte duet and were loudly applauded as also
was the brilliant piano forte duet by Messrs.
Rechel and Laager. H. Ryder-Taylor who
was well received read Aytoun’s pleasing
lay “The execution of Montrose.”
The drawing for the presentation organ
under the superin tendance of Aiderman Cope-
land Dr. E. Bennett T. F. Brady and 11.
Ryder-Taylor was then held and little Miss
Nixon drew the winning ticket No. 198 held
by Mr. C. J. Therriott.
The ball was then proceeded with under
direction of C. H. Muench. Proceedings ter-
minated at 2 o’clock to the satisfaction of all
concerned.
We should add that as Mr. Otto Hilgers
had crushed two of his fingers Professor Kat
zenberger consented at an hour’s notice to
act and by his ready reading at sight he was
an able substitute.
Mr. Lawlor was unavoidably detained in
New York but Mr. Murchie on behalf of
himself and friend desires to thank those
who assisted in the affair and the press for
the valuable assistance so kindly and gener-
ously rendered.

first twine binder used this season in the state

should lead to universal use of the implement.
