HOUSTON (UPI) — With $10,000
added money in the kitty and
without the distractions of Arnold
Palmer and Gary Player, 102 pros
and four amateurs began
teeing off today at the $50,000
Houston Classic.
Californians ' Gene Littler and
Billy Casper, second and third in
winnings this year, started play
on the 7200-yard Memorial Park
course as co-favorites.
Jay Hebert of Lafayette, La.,
winner here in 1961 by beating
Ken Venturi in an 18-hole playoff
after each posted 276 for 72 holes,
v as hoping to become the first
golfer ever to win the Houston
Classic twice in a row.
Palmer and Player, first and
fourth money-makers on the cur-
rent tour, respectively, are the
only pros missing of 40 tourna-
ment winners this year.
Palmer said private business
kept him away and Player re-
turned to South Africa earlier this
month to be on hand at the birth
of his third child.- But the local
golfing clan ventured that rela-
tively poor greens on city-owned
Memorial might have influenced
their decision.
A winter freeze on the Gulf
Coast damaged the grass and un-
week. When you,get to Florida for
spring training you only have
about 10 days to get in playing
shape. Older fellows find those the
toughest 10 days of the year. This
time I was in good shape and
fired by the Laker management.
He declined to comment further
4 the situation.
Both the Celtics and Lakers
agreed there was little difference
Sam Jones with 27 points, only
two of which came in the first
half and five in over time. Frank
Ramsey scored 23 points, 17 in the
first half and 15 of them on 16
trips to the foul line.
West Scores 35
Jumping-Jerry West was second
to Baylor in top game scoring
with 35 points. Frank Selvy had
ten, four of them in the last 99
seconds to tie the game in regu-
lation play, and he barely missed
a jump shot that could have
won it .
The Celtics post-game commen-
tary was mostly incoherent. Auer-
bach said he told his players,
“You are the champions. Go out
there and play like it.”
And they did. Especially Bill

end of last season. That regular
rest is important because when
you get to be my age and you get
run down you don’t snap back
like those young fellows. The se-
cret is to keep on an even keel
and not let yourself get too tired.”
The three-time Most Valuable
Player thinks, too, that -a "shnsi4
ble approach” to spring training
has something to do with "my
best start since 1957.” ' •
Worked Harder Eartier
"I worked harder, earlier.” he
remembered. “Right after the
first of the year I started going
disgusted and ready to quit be-
cause of his three poorest seasons
in a row. He batted only .255 in
1959. .275 in 1960 and .288 in 1961.
Maybe Another Year
"I just thought that if I wasn’t
going to hit, I’d only hurt the club
and I’d step out on my own,” he
srid., “Well, with this start, and
this working formula, maybe I’ve
got another year."
The man who holds 36 major
and league records, and sets an-
other almost every time he goes
to the plate, grinned widely.
“Anyhow, Keane knows me pret-
ty well and he figures if I have
a good year, I’ll be back.”
Picking up a bat, he headed into
the cage.' Looking back over his
shoulder he laughed:
