Friday night’s 15th annual
Austin County appreciation din-
ner and family night for county
officials and their staffs was the
first event in celebration of the
county’s 150th anniversary.
Judge LeRoy Grebe gave honor
to this occasion and the anniver-
sary as he presided over the din-
ner program at the Sealy Ameri-
can Legion Hall.

The board is considering the
central appraisal district collec-
tion method, with all taxes to be
paid in the Bellville-located of-
fice. However, the present meth-
od of school tax collection will
continue until any definite plans
are made. The issue will be
brought before the board again at
its next session.
The school trustee election was
called for Saturday, April 4. Two
positions are to be filled for full
three year terms and one position
for an unexpired term, the latter
to fill the vacancy created by the
resignation of Dale Dycus, due to
health reasons. His resignation
was accepted with regret.

Special recognition was given
to the county volunteer ambu-
lance corps, for the service the
men and women provide to the
various communities. Commis-
sioner Herbert Galle commended
Dennis Diggs, Jaime Armendariz,
Linda Toman, J. P. Biggs and
John Rinn of Adam 1, II, IV and
V, respectively.
H. C. Frizzell was not present
to accept his award for 24 years of
service with distinction. He has
recently retired as justice of the
peace of precinct one. Charley
Smith, former county attorney,
"$
Allen McKinley, chief of the
Austin County tax appraisal
district, informed the Sealy Inde-
pendent School District board on
February 10 that a new tax collec-
tion system will need to be imple-
mented. He explained preliminary
plans for a central tax collection.
According to Superintendent
Tom Golson, state by-laws re-
quire that in order to collect
taxes, the county tax appraiser
must be a certified collector. The
previous appraiser, Bart Town-
send, was so qualified, while Mc-
Kinley is not certified. The school
board can do one of two things —
engage a certified tax collector or
enter a central collection system.
