FREEDOM WITHOUT OBLIGATION
Election year fever is running high. The flag waving, mud slinging and
campaign speeches and promises have created front-page attention. Workers
are wearying, candidates are cresting andelection coverage crews are gearing
up for a long night on November 6. Everyone is involved. Well, not everyone.
According to the "Statistical Abstract of the United States," only 48.5 percent
of all eligible voters cast ballots in 1982. Only 46 percent bothered to vote
in the off-year elections of 1986. Everyone is involved except the most important
person in a democracy: the voter.
For small businesses, this voter apathy can have long-lasting effects. For
example, in 1986,23.1 percent of the eligible voters could have elected an
anti-business majority to Congress. In a democracy, a minority of the eligible
voters should not control our political destiny.
According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, 28 percent of American
businessmen and women arc not registered to vote. More than 40 percent
did not vote in the last election. Perhaps this is why the small business environment
continues to be,eroded by bad legislation.
What a victory! Friday night’s win
over Estacado will become a part of
local history. It is the first time
Levelland has beaten Estacado and
everyone is ecstatic. It is a game
which wil I be discussed and bragged
about for weeks to come. Fans
wanting to see a replay can do so by
attending Monday night’s Lobo
Booster Club meeting. Congratula-
tions to both the players and coaches.
