In 1954, MDA began
partnering with local fire
departments across the
country for an annual
fundraiser known as “Fill
the Boot.” Previously, Fill
the Boot was scheduled
nationwide to coincide
with celebrity Jerry Lewis’
telethon on Labor Day
Weekend, which would
raise money for research
into muscular dystrophy,
up until a few years ago.
Now, fire departments who
volunteer to be a part of Fill
the Boot can pick their own
time to participate. Accord-
ing to the MDA website,
over a hundred thousand
firefighters participated in
Fill the Boot in 2018, rais-
ing a total of $20 million.
During this fundraiser,

Amendment Election
Proposition Number 1
(HJR 72)
Proposition Numbers
(SJR24)
SJR 24 proposes a constitu-
tional amendment that would
serve as a municipal judge in
more than one municipality at
the same time, in the same
manner as appointed munici-
pal judges.
The proposed amendment will
appear on the ballot as follows:
“The constitutional amend-
ment permitting a person to
hold more than one office
as a municipal judge at the
same time.”
Proposition Number 2

Scouts and more community helpers shared their time to pick up litter around

the parents on reading to
their children, discussing
strategies for preparing
their children for school
through reading. Addition-
ally, the program plans to
track how the parents are
doing and how often they
are reading with their chil-
dren. At the end of each
meeting, each child will
receive a free book.
“We’re going to be pro-
moting to the parents (to)
sit down with your kid for
20 minutes a day, every
day and read to them,”
Hicks said. “You can read
the same story over and
over again, or you can read
different stories. You can
read it in English, you can
read it in Spanish. If you’re
not strong in your literary
skills, get the book and go
through it and look at it to-
gether.”
Both professors are bilin-
gual, so the program will
be in both English and
Spanish. Additionally, the
meetings will be filmed
and posted online for par-
ents who are unable to at-
tend.
