claim and receives benefits for the
next 3 calendar weeks will receive a
retroactive check for the waiting pe-
riod. A waiting payment is not made
under the old rules.
Starting July 1 the maximum disa-
bility payment rates also rise to $30
weekly, based on wage earnings for
disability occurring on or after that
date. Private disability plans are re-
quired to pay benefits at least equal to
the state’s plan.

Denver Seale, conservative leader of
Commissloners Court from District 4,

re-election.
A statement made by the youthful
executive in connection with hla cam-
paign for reelection read aa follows:
"Notwithstanding the strong pres-
sure that has been brought to bear
upon me during my term of office to
go contrary to what I consider the best
interests of the people and contrary to
the provisions of the Constitution and
the Law, I have withstood such intimi-
dation at the expense, on occasion, of
having my motives questioned and my
position misrepresented," Mr. Seale
declared.
“I promise to continue to vote for
the best interests of the public and in
accordance with the Constitution and

wilt inaugurate an annual “Texan of
Distinction" award, honoring a Texan
who has distinguished himself in In-
dustry. the sciences or the arts on a
national scale. Fair President R. L
Thornton has announced.
Thornton also announced the ap-
pointment of a selection committee
composed of men who are themselves
distinguished Texans: D. A. Hulcy,
president of Lone Star Gaa Co. and
chairman of the board of the United
States Chamber of Commerce, chair,
man: Dr. Umphrey Lee, president of
Southern Methodist University: Stan-
ley Marcus, president of Neiman-
Marcus Co.; Fred M. Mayer, president
of Continental Supply Co.; and W G.
Vollmer, president of the Texaa & Pa-
cific Railway Co.
No member of the committee is
either an officer or director of the
State Fair.
The honoree will be the speaker at
the State Fair banquet, held each year
during the fair. The award will be
made at the banquet.
The ’Texan of Distinction" will be
presented with a specially designed
award that will be both Impressive and
valuable. Thornton said.
The recipient must be a native-born
Texan who baa lived in Texan at least
15 years of his life.
"It In our intention to make this
award by America’s largest annual
exposition one of the most prized
honors that can be bestowed upon any
man by his native state,” Thornton
said.
'The purpose of the award is to
focus national attention on the achieve-
ments of distinguished Texans, espe-
cially in industry. It makes no differ-
ence whether they have made their
mark while residing in Texas or in
some other section of the country.
