August 9, 2019 will mark 69 years since Oscar Berry
Swindall, Jr. was killed in action in the Korean War. He
was the first soldier killed from Crosby County. Don Fer-
ree of Crosbyton was with him when he was killed on a
hill outside of Mariang, South Korea. Oscar had only been
in combat 3 days before he was killed. He was 21 years
old. Don said that he and some South Koreans took the
wounded and the dead to an aid station about 2 miles
away and they were constantly under fire and had to go
in total darkness to avoid snipers. Don came to see the
family in Crosbyton and fell in love with Oscar's sister and
Bicycle shoes (cleated) they married and he has been a resident of Crosbyton
ever since. Don was originally from California. In the top
Blouses (E) photo above is Oscar B. Swindall, Jr. on the left with some
Boots (general purpose) buddies. Oscar is buried in the Crosbyton Cemetery.
