tieth U. S. Colored Infantry has been directed to have his command in
readiness to move at that hour, andl to report to Colonel Cranldal for
orders. A section of artillery has been detached from Colonel Liclb's
comman(l, 1(lld will also move out under the collmman(ling officer of the
infantry. On the arrival of the forces at Big Black the commanding
officer will report to Brig. Geni. E. S. )ennis. If he has moved from
there they will proceed to Edwards' Depot. The troops will carry three
days' rations in haversacks and three in wagons.

tieth U. S. Colored Infl-ttry to have his command in readiness to move
to Big Black to-morrow morning at 8 o'clock, and to report in person
to Col. FM.M. Crandal, Forty-eiglhth U. S. Colored Infantry, fiw orders.
The troops will carry three days' rations in haversacks and three in
wagons. 'All details froim this regiment must be relieved by details
from other regiments of your command to-night, so that they may ac-
company the expe(lition in the morning.

SIRn: Several messengers report the commencement of destructivee
operations by guerrillas. I have thought it Illy duty, as tending \'ery
much to protect .Government prproperty, an(l by advice received at the
office of tihe p ost c(on wander, to make you a report, antd to solicit your
attention to some co nsideration s respecting them.
A stone, as ail intiiiatioin of the commencement of )p)('eratiols, was
laid it)po(i the track May 4 between Franklin and Spring HBill. But
the principal field of their present operations seems to be between Ste-
vensol and H untsville, on the Memphis and Charlestonl I ailr oad, and
along the Tennessee and Alaanma Railroad. They have since the
above date twice fired into trains, a;nd in the last instance killed the
engineer aid fireman. The unfortunate engineer, although mortally
wolnde(l conducted his trainl out of thereach of misrcrants, ;Ind (lied. A
messenger has also reported, since I began this communications, that a
very alarnminrg attempt was mna(le to destroy the lridgge at Elk amomt,
about forty miles this side of [untsville. And another has reported
that the telegraph wire was cut on Sunday, and a rail laid upon the
track to throw oftt' a train, upon the same railroad; and tiOat a (cOlsil-
erable quantity of cord wood was set on fire in several l)laces between
here and Franklin.
If these miscreant operations are allowed to go on and increase in this
ratio, may not some serious iml)ediment soon be interposed to your[(IAP. LI.
