A correspondent of a leading pro-
vincial paper (Thr \fancheaiei' Guar-
dian), who was in Metz during the
siege, has just written an account of
. some of his experiences in that city.
He condemns strongly, ami the people
of Metz also condemned, the reticence
and inaction of Bazaine. When the
fall of the Empire had been ascertained
and the Republic had been proclaimed,
Metz was anxious to follow the example
of the capital. But the Marshal deci-
ded otherwise, and stated that he hail
received no official news of the fall of
